To hide the contact pictures next to text messages on an iPhone, open Settings, tap Apps, tap Messages, and turn off Show Contact Photos. On older iOS versions there is no Apps step: go to Settings > Messages instead. The change applies to every conversation and you can reverse it at any time.
What the Show Contact Photos Setting Does
The Messages app normally shows a small circle beside each conversation in the conversation list, which is the main screen that lists all of your text threads. The circle holds the photo saved for that contact. If the contact has no photo, the circle usually shows their initials or a generic gray silhouette.
Show Contact Photos is a single on/off switch for those circles. A few points to know before you change it:
- It is one setting for the whole app. You cannot hide the picture for one person and keep it for another.
- It covers both iMessage (blue bubble) and SMS, MMS, or RCS (green bubble) conversations.
- It only changes how Messages looks. Photos saved on your contact cards are not deleted, and nothing changes for the people you text.
- Names and phone numbers stay visible, so you can still tell conversations apart.
People usually turn it off for a cleaner list, a little more room for each message preview, or so that faces are not visible to someone glancing at the screen.

Which iPhones and iOS Versions This Applies To
The steps below follow the current Settings layout in iOS 27, which also matches iOS 26 and iOS 18, where Apple groups app settings under Apps. Apple’s guide to setting up Messages on iPhone uses the same route (Settings, then Apps, then Messages) to reach the Messages settings screen. On iOS 17 and earlier, Messages sits in the main Settings list, so you skip the Apps step.
Apple’s user guide does not describe the Show Contact Photos switch itself, so its exact position on the Messages settings screen can differ between iOS versions. If it is not near the top, scroll the whole screen before deciding it is missing.
How to Hide Contact Pictures in the iPhone Messages App
- Open the Settings app. It is the gray gear icon on the Home Screen or in the App Library.
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings list and tap Apps. If you do not see Apps, your iPhone uses the older layout, so go straight to step 3.
- Tap Messages. In the Apps list, the apps are sorted alphabetically, and you can also use the search field at the top.
- Find Show Contact Photos and tap the switch to turn it off. The switch is off when it is no longer green.
- Open the Messages app and look at the conversation list. The circles to the left of each name should be gone, and the names and previews shift over to use the space.
How to Confirm It Worked and How to Undo It
The change should show up as soon as you return to Messages. Check two places:
- The conversation list: regular (unpinned) conversations should show only a name or number and a message preview.
- Inside a conversation: the contact picture at the top of the thread may also be hidden, leaving just the name. This can vary by iOS version.
To bring the pictures back, return to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn Show Contact Photos on again. Nothing is lost by switching back and forth, because the photos themselves stay on your contact cards the whole time. The same settings screen also lets you remove the subject line in iPhone Messages.
Troubleshooting
The pictures are still showing
Close Messages completely and open it again. Apple’s instructions to quit and reopen an app on iPhone are to open the App Switcher, swipe to find the app, then swipe up on it. If the pictures remain after that, restart the iPhone and check the switch once more.
Pictures remain at the top of the list
Those are probably pinned conversations. Apple describes pinned conversations as larger icons at the top of the conversation list, and these icons are reported to stay visible even with Show Contact Photos turned off. If you want them gone, unpin the conversation: touch and hold the pinned conversation, then tap Unpin. Apple covers this in Keep track of messages on iPhone. The conversation is not deleted. It moves back into the regular list.
A picture still appears in message notifications
This setting is for the Messages app screens. Some iPhone owners report that a contact picture or gray icon can still appear in a message notification banner or on the Lock Screen after turning the switch off, and Apple does not document a separate switch for that. If the concern is privacy, you can limit what notifications reveal in Settings > Notifications > Messages by changing Show Previews, which controls whether message text appears while the phone is locked. I can’t find Show Contact Photos
- Make sure you are in the Messages settings and not the Contacts or Phone settings.
- Scroll the entire Messages settings screen. The switch has moved between iOS versions.
- Use the search field in the Settings app, type Contact Photos, and tap the result listed under Messages.
- Check Display Zoom, which makes everything on screen larger. Owners on the MacRumors forums report that the switch disappears when Display Zoom is set to Larger Text. Search Settings for Display Zoom, and if it shows Larger Text, switching to Default may bring the switch back. Apple does not document this link, so treat it as a reported fix.
- If Screen Time or a work or school profile manages the iPhone, some settings may be restricted by whoever set it up.
Hiding a Picture vs. Removing It From a Contact
Turning off Show Contact Photos hides every picture in Messages at once. If your real goal is to get rid of one wrong or outdated picture, edit that contact instead. Open the Contacts app, tap the contact, tap Edit, and change or remove the photo. The steps to edit a contact on iPhone cover that screen in more detail. Keep in mind that editing a contact changes it everywhere the contact is used, including the Phone app, and on other devices that sync the same contacts.
If one conversation shows the wrong contact name or photo because two people were linked into one card, unmerge (unlink) contacts on an iPhone.

Can I hide the contact picture for just one conversation?
No. Show Contact Photos is a single switch that applies to all conversations in Messages. To change how one person appears, edit or remove the photo on that person’s contact card.
Does turning off Show Contact Photos delete my contact photos?
No. It only stops Messages from displaying them. The photos stay saved in the Contacts app and return in Messages as soon as you turn the switch back on.
Will other people know I hid their picture?
No. This is a display setting on your own iPhone. It does not send anything to the people you text and does not change what they see on their phones.
Does this change the name and photo I share with others?
No. The name and photo that other people see for you is a separate feature. You manage it inside the Messages app by tapping Edit at the top of the conversation list and choosing Name & Photo.
Does it hide pictures in the Phone or Contacts app?
No. The switch is in the Messages settings and only affects Messages. Pictures can still appear in the Contacts app, on favorites in the Phone app, and on incoming calls. If you want the opposite on calls, you can make the incoming call picture full screen on iPhone.
Does it work for group conversations?
The setting applies to the whole conversation list, so group conversations in the regular list lose their picture circles as well. Pinned group conversations follow the same exception as pinned one-to-one conversations.
