I love the combination of performance features on this laptop. The i5 processor is the perfect choice for people that want high performance, but don’t want to pay the premium that an i7 processor commands. You also get 6 GB of RAM in this laptop, which is more than the 4 GB that seems to be standard on the current crop of Windows 8 laptops at this price point.
The most interesting factor, however, is the hybrid hard drive. It is a combination of a regular 500 GB hard drive and a 24 GB solid state drive. This allows you to start up and wake up much more quickly than is possible with just a standard hard drive, while also providing faster access to your data. While just a solid state hard drive would be faster, it would also be considerably more expensive and provide you with a smaller amount of storage. So this hybrid drive gives you the performance increase where you need it, as well as the larger amount of storage space that most users will require.
I have always been a big fan of 14-inch laptops, especially for people that need to use their laptops on a plane or small desk with regularity. Many 13-inch laptops feel too small, while many 15-inch laptops can be slightly too bulky for use in cramped spaces. A 14-inch laptop solves both of these problems.
The 5 hours of battery life is about average for this type of computer, while the 4.4 lbs weight is about 8 ounces – 16 ounces less than you would be dealing with for a comparably equipped 15-inch laptop. While that small weight reduction may not initially seem like a big deal, it certainly feels like it if you are used to carrying a 5.5 lb laptop for a decent amount of time.
The Wi-Fi card in this machine seems to work reliably, and shouldn’t give you any problems when you need to sign into a new wireless network, or if you are in a location with poor wireless reception.
The ASUS S400CA-DB51T has the full compliment of ports and connection options that you find on similar laptops. The full list features:
- 802.11 b/g/n WiFi
- Wired ethernet port
- Bluetooth 4.0
- (1) USB 3.0 port
- (2) USB 2.0 ports
- HDMI port
- Audio jack combo
- SD card reader
- HD webcam
If I was currently shopping for a new laptop, this machine would certainly garner a lot of attention from me. I prefer the hybrid hard drive over other options (at least until solid-state drives in laptops become more affordable), and the i5 processor with 6 GB of RAM makes it easy to browse the Web, do some light gaming, and work in Microsoft Office and Photoshop. Th 14-inch screen size is ideal for concerns of portability, and the inclusion of a wired ethernet port is helpful if you are trying to get online in a hotel that has a poor wireless connection, or if you are working in an office without a Wi-Fi network.
If you are looking for a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop that offers fast performance and is encased inside a well-constructed case, then this is a great option for you.
