Pros of the Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-10000BLK

  • The i5 processor offers a great combination of power and efficiency
  • 4 USB ports, HDMI connection, Bluetooth, USB 3.0 – lots of bells and whistles
  • I love the keyboards on these laptops
  • Windows 8 runs well on this machine
  • 4 GB of RAM and 500 GB hard drive are plenty for most users, and this is much of the reason that the price is so low

Cons of the Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-10000BLK

  • Wired ethernet connection is only 10/100
  • No backlit keyboard
  • I would prefer a higher resolution screen, but they are very uncommon at this price point

Performance

The processor is the most important part of the computer, especially when you are using common programs like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office. The i5 is a very powerful processor, and will allow you to multitask on the Internet and with documents, while also being able to manage programs like Adobe Photoshop or AutoCAD. It will struggle when dealing with very large files in either of these programs, but will work admirably under normal use.

The integrated graphics card is not ideal for heavy gaming with titles like Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3 or Battlefield 3, but it can run games like Diablo 3 or World of Warcraft with ease. It is also well suited for watching DVDs with the included DVD drive, or for streaming videos from Netflix, Amazon or Hulu.

Portability

The Dell Inspiron 15 i15RV-10000BLK represents a typical 15 inch laptop when it comes to size, weight and battery life. It’s 5.19 lbs are average for full-sized 15-inch laptops with DVD drives, but is noticeably heavier than a more expensive ultrabook.

The screen size is a common one, so it will easily fit on an seat-back tray on an airplane, or in most laptop carrying cases.

The 5 hours of battery life is also about average, making it acceptable for use on long plane flights or in class, the library or lab where you might not have access to a power outlet for an extended period of time.

Connectivity

As mentioned earlier, this Dell laptop has a lot of bells and whistles when it comes to ports and connections, and you can see the full list outlined below

  • 802.11 b/g/n WiFi
  • RJ-45 Ethernet port (10/100 speed)
  • Bluetooth
  • 4 total USB ports – 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 ports
  • 8 in 1 digital media card reader
  • HDMI port
  • 8x DVD-RW, DL
  • Webcam
  • Headphone out
  • Waves MaxxAudio

Conclusion

Normally I would say that an i5 processor might be more than what is necessary for a lot of users that just want a computer in their home to check email and browse the Internet, but this laptop is such a good value that there’s no reason to buy a significantly lesser laptop for slightly less money. The powerful processor, connections and features will keep this laptop future-proof for several years, meaning that it won’t be quickly outdated as new technology is released. It’s also a good choice for students that want a laptop to last them through college, as the Inspiron line is well-known for its’ durability.
