To remove a site from Firefox’s address bar suggestions, start typing until it appears, press the down arrow to highlight it, and press Shift + Delete. Or click the three-dot button next to the suggestion and choose Remove from history. To stop certain kinds of suggestions from showing at all, go to Settings > Search and uncheck them under the address bar section.

How to Remove One Suggestion From the Address Bar
Mozilla gives two ways to do this.
With the Menu
Click the three-dot button next to the address bar suggestion and select Remove from history. Mozilla says this option was rolled out starting in Firefox 113.
With the Keyboard
- Type or paste enough text for Firefox to show the item in the drop-down.
- Press the down arrow key to highlight it.
- Hold down Shift and press Delete.
Result: The suggestion disappears from the list. Mozilla says the keyboard method works for both browsing history and search history entries.
Why Some Suggestions Won’t Go Away
Mozilla notes that suggestions with a star are bookmarks, not history. Deleting history won’t remove them. To get rid of one, delete the bookmark, or tell Firefox not to suggest bookmarks (see the settings section below).
Clicking the address bar without typing shows Shortcuts, your most visited or pinned sites, rather than history suggestions. Those are managed separately in your New Tab page settings.
How to Remove Everything From One Site
- Click the menu button, click History, then click Manage history at the bottom to open the Library window.
- In the Search History field at the top right, type the site’s name and press Enter.
- Right-click the site in the results and select Forget About This Site.
- Close the Library window.
Result: Mozilla says this removes all traces of that site from your history, so it stops appearing as a suggestion.
How to Clear All Address Bar History
- Click the menu button, then click History.
- Click Clear Recent History.
- Set Time range to clear to Everything.
- Check Browsing & Download History. To remove search history too, check Form & Search History.
- Uncheck anything else you want to keep, then click OK.
Result: Your address bar history is cleared. Bookmarks and open tabs can still appear as suggestions unless you turn them off.
How to Choose What the Address Bar Suggests
- Click the menu button and select Settings.
- Select Search on the left.
- Under the Address Bar section, select or deselect Browsing history, Bookmarks, Open tabs, Shortcuts and Search engines.
Result: Firefox only suggests the kinds of results you left checked. Mozilla notes that in the U.S., this section is called Address Bar — Firefox Suggest and has extra settings. Older guides put these options under Privacy & Security, but Mozilla’s current steps use the Search panel.
How to Stop Firefox From Saving History
- Click the menu button and choose Settings.
- Click Privacy & Security and go to the History section.
- Next to Firefox will, choose Never remember history.
Mozilla’s history guide also offers a middle option: choose Use custom settings for history and check Clear history when Firefox closes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I search only my history from the address bar?
Yes. Mozilla says typing ^ with your search terms (separated by a space) shows only matches from your browsing history. Typing * shows only bookmarks, and % shows only open tabs.
Does private browsing add to address bar suggestions?
