To show the menu bar in Firefox, press the Alt key to see it for a moment. To keep it on, right-click an empty spot on the toolbar or tab strip and click Menu Bar. If the menu bar and toolbars are gone because Firefox is in full screen, press F11 to exit full screen.
These steps follow Mozilla’s current support page, Restore the Menu bar in Firefox. Mozilla notes that the menu bar (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Profiles, Tools, Help) is hidden by default, so a missing menu bar usually is not a fault.
Before You Start
- Which Firefox: this guide covers the desktop version of Firefox on Windows and Linux, using the labels in Mozilla’s support pages as of October 2026. Mozilla says menu options can look different on Linux with certain desktop environments.
- Mac: Mozilla lists the Alt and F10 menu bar shortcuts for Windows and Linux only. On a Mac, application menus normally sit in the menu bar at the top of the screen, so the Firefox menus should already be there when Firefox is the active app.
- Phones and tablets: Firefox for Android and iOS does not have this menu bar. These steps do not apply there.
- Terms: the menu bar is the row of text menus (File, Edit, View and so on). The menu button is the three-line button at the right end of the toolbar. The tab strip is the row that holds your open tabs.
How to Display the Menu Bar in Firefox
Show It Temporarily
Press Alt or F10. The menu bar appears above the tabs and stays until you pick a menu item or click somewhere else. If Alt doesn’t work, Mozilla suggests pressing AltGr.
This is the quickest route when you only need one command, such as something in the File or View menu, and you don’t want to give up a row of screen space.
Always Show the Menu Bar
- Right-click an empty area of the toolbar or tab strip at the top of the Firefox window. Aim for blank space, not a tab, a button, or the web page itself. A short menu opens.
- Click Menu Bar.
The menu bar now stays at the top of every Firefox window. To hide it again, right-click the same area and click Menu Bar once more to clear the check mark.
Use the Customize Toolbar Screen
Use this route if you can’t find an empty spot to right-click.
- Click the menu button (three lines) at the top right.
- Click More tools, then Customize toolbar. A tab named Customize Firefox opens.
- Click Toolbars at the bottom of the window and click Menu Bar.
- Click Done to save the change.
The same screen has a Title Bar checkbox in the lower left if you also want the title bar back. Mozilla describes all of these controls in Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.
Once the menu bar is showing, there is a third way into that screen: click View, click Toolbars, and select Customize Toolbar.

How to Exit Full Screen in Firefox
Full screen hides the menu bar and toolbars, even when the menu bar is turned on. To get out of it:
- Press F11 on Windows or Linux. Some laptops need Fn + F11.
- Press Command + Shift + F on a Mac.
- Or click the menu button on the right side of the toolbar and click the full screen button in the list of menu items.
F11 is a toggle, so pressing it again puts Firefox back into full screen. Mozilla also notes that the Title Bar checkbox and the Bookmarks Toolbar setting can be missing from the Customize screen while Firefox is in full screen. Exit full screen first if you don’t see them.
How to Restore the Bookmarks Toolbar
The bookmarks toolbar is a separate bar from the menu bar. It sits under the address bar and holds your most-used bookmarks.
- Right-click a blank spot on the tab bar at the top of the Firefox window.
- Point to Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Choose Always Show.
The other options are Never Show and Only Show on New Tab. Mozilla says the toolbar shows only on the New Tab page by default, which is why it can seem to disappear on other pages. Ctrl + Shift + B also shows or hides it (Command + Shift + B on a Mac). Mozilla’s Bookmarks Toolbar page covers the rest. What if a Toolbar Is Still Missing?
Work through these in order. Each step changes more than the one before it.
1. Restore the Default Toolbars
Warning: Mozilla says Restore Defaults also switches vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs and resets the default theme. If you use a dark theme in Firefox, expect to choose it again afterward.
- Right-click an empty area of the toolbar and select Customize Toolbar.
- Click Restore Defaults.
- Click Done.
This puts the standard set of buttons and toolbars back. The menu bar is hidden by default, so turn it on again with the right-click method above.
2. Test in Troubleshoot Mode
Troubleshoot Mode (called Safe Mode in older versions) starts Firefox with extensions, themes and some customizations turned off. Nothing is deleted, and your add-ons return when you start Firefox normally.
- Click the menu button and click Help (Mozilla’s Troubleshoot Mode page labels it Help and Report).
- Select Troubleshoot Mode and click Restart.
- In the window that appears, click Open.
If the menu button is missing too, Mozilla says you can hold the Shift key while starting Firefox. If the toolbars look normal in this mode, Mozilla says the likely cause is an extension, a theme or hardware acceleration. 3. Refresh Firefox
Warning: a refresh is permanent. Mozilla says it keeps bookmarks, browsing and download history, passwords, cookies and form autofill data, but removes extensions and themes, website permissions, modified preferences, added search engines and toolbar customizations. Write down the extensions you rely on first.
- Click the menu button and select Help.
- Choose More troubleshooting information.
- Click Refresh Firefox on the right side of the page.
- Click Refresh Firefox in the confirmation window. Firefox closes and restarts.
- Click Finish when the import summary appears.
Mozilla recommends this when the file that stores your toolbar information has become corrupt. The refresh puts your old profile in a desktop folder named Old Firefox Data. Details are on Mozilla’s Refresh Firefox page.
Other Things to Check
- No right-click menu: you probably clicked a tab, a button or the page. Try the blank space to the right of the last tab, or use the menu button route.
- Old version: labels move between releases. If your menus don’t match, check for updates in Firefox and try again.
- Work or school computer: an organization can manage Firefox settings. If an option is missing or won’t stay changed, ask your IT administrator.

How to Remove the Separate Search Bar
Firefox searches from the address bar by default. If you see a separate search box and want it gone, click the menu button, click More tools > Customize Toolbar, drag the Search bar item off the toolbar, and click Done. Drag it back the same way if you change your mind. Mozilla says Firefox also removes the separate Search bar automatically if you haven’t used it for 120 days.
