To log out of Amazon on a computer, select Account & Lists at the top of the page and choose Sign Out. In the Amazon Shopping app, tap the menu button (☰) at the bottom right, scroll to the bottom of the page, tap Sign out, and confirm.
Those two routes cover most people. The rest of this guide explains each one in detail, shows how to sign out of a device you no longer have, and covers the other Amazon apps and devices that keep their own sign-in.
Before You Sign Out
Amazon uses the words Sign Out rather than “log out,” so that is the label to look for. A few things are worth knowing first:
- It only affects where you are. Amazon states that when you sign out on your device, you are signed out only on that device. Other phones, computers and TVs stay signed in.
- Your account is untouched. Signing out does not close your account or delete anything in it. You simply have to enter your email or mobile number and password the next time.
- Know your password first. If you are not sure of it, check that you can sign back in before you sign out. If you use two-step verification (a second code sent by text message or an authenticator app), keep that phone nearby.
- These steps are for Amazon.com. They follow the current Amazon.com help pages for the website and for the Amazon Shopping app on iPhone and Android. Other country sites and older app versions may look a little different.
How to Sign Out on the Amazon Website (Computer)
These steps come from Amazon’s Sign out of Your Amazon Account on the Amazon Website help page.
- Open Amazon in the web browser where you are signed in. You have to sign out in each browser separately, so use the same one you signed in with.
- Find Account & Lists near the top right of the page. When you are signed in, a greeting with your name appears with it.
- Select Account & Lists, or move your mouse pointer over it, to open the drop-down menu.
- Select Sign Out. It is usually near the bottom of the menu, so you may need to scroll within the menu on a small screen.
Amazon should then show its sign-in page, which confirms that you are signed out in this browser.
How to Sign Out in a Phone or Tablet Browser
If you shop in Safari, Chrome or another mobile browser instead of the app, the menu is in a different place. The same Amazon help page covers it:
- Open Amazon in your mobile browser.
- Select your name at the top of the page.
- In the menu that appears, select Sign Out.
Signing out in the browser does not sign you out of the Amazon Shopping app on the same phone, and the reverse is also true. If you use both, sign out of both.
How to Sign Out in the Amazon Shopping App (iPhone and Android)
Amazon gives the same steps for Android and iOS on its Sign out of Your Amazon Account in the Amazon Shopping App help page.
- Open the Amazon Shopping app.
- Tap the menu button in the bottom-right corner. It looks like three stacked lines (☰) and is often called the hamburger button.
- Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the menu page.
- Tap Sign out.
- Confirm when the app asks whether you want to sign out.
The app should return to its sign-in screen. If you do not see Sign out at the bottom of the menu, look under Settings on that same page. Amazon has described the option there in some app versions, sometimes worded as Not [your name]? Sign out. Updating the app from the App Store or Google Play is also worth trying if your menu does not match.
Switch Accounts Instead of Signing Out
If the goal is to use a second account on the same phone, you do not have to sign out each time. Amazon’s Manage Your Amazon Accounts on Mobile Devices page says you can add, remove, or switch between accounts in the Shopping app:
- In the Amazon Shopping app, open the Menu.
- Go to Settings and select Switch Accounts.
Warning: Amazon says not to add your account to a device that is public or shared with people you do not know, because anyone with access to the device also has access to your Amazon accounts. Amazon also notes that an added account takes on the app’s existing permissions and preferences, such as camera roll access and language, and that changing app settings for one account changes them for all.

Sign Out of a Device You No Longer Have
You cannot tap Sign Out on a device that is not in your hands. Amazon offers two documented options instead, and which one fits depends on the device.
Deregister a Kindle, Fire tablet, Fire TV, or Echo
Deregistering removes a device from your Amazon account and disconnects it from your digital content and Amazon services. According to Amazon’s How to Deregister Your Amazon Device page, it works for Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets, Alexa-enabled devices such as Echo, Fire TV devices, and the Kindle and Audible apps.
Before you deregister: the device loses access to your account, purchased content and Amazon services until someone registers it again. Your purchases stay in your account, and you can restore access by registering the device again with your Amazon sign-in details.
- Sign in to Amazon in a browser and open Devices. Amazon also calls this area Manage Your Content and Devices.
- Choose the device from the list.
- Select Deregister and confirm.

Change your password for a lost phone or computer
For a lost phone, Amazon’s Logging Out of a Lost Device page says to update your security settings from a different device, including your password, mobile number, email address, and two-step verification number. Amazon states that changing your password signs you out of Amazon apps and websites on any non-Kindle device.
Before you change it: this signs you out on your own devices too, so expect to sign back in on each one with the new password.
- Sign in to Amazon and open Your Account.
- Select Login & Security. Amazon may ask you to verify that it is you.
- Next to Password, select Edit.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and select Save changes.
These steps match Amazon’s Change Your Password page. Because the password change does not cover Kindle devices, deregister a lost Kindle separately using the steps above.
Other Amazon Apps Have Their Own Sign-Out
Signing out of the Shopping app or the website does not sign you out of Amazon’s other apps. Each one has its own steps:
- Alexa app: open More, select Settings, then Account Management, then Sign Out, as described on Amazon’s Sign Out of the Alexa App page.
- Amazon Photos app: select the Profile icon at the top right, then the Settings icon, then Sign out, per Amazon’s Sign out from an Amazon Photos Mobile App page.
- Prime Video: sign out in the app’s settings on each TV or streaming device. For example, here is how to sign out of Prime Video on a Roku. If you cannot sign out on the device, Amazon’s Prime Video sign-in and sign-out help says to go to Devices in Account & Settings and select Deregister next to it.

How to Check That You Are Signed Out
- Website: the top of the page shows a sign-in prompt such as Hello, sign in instead of your name.
- Shopping app: the app shows its sign-in screen instead of your account.
- Deregistered device: it no longer appears as registered to you in the Devices list.
To undo a sign-out, sign in again with your email or mobile number and password. To undo a deregistration, register the device again.
Troubleshooting
I cannot find Sign Out on the website
The option is inside the Account & Lists drop-down, not on the main page. On a small or zoomed-in screen the menu can run past the bottom of the window. Zoom the browser out or scroll, and look near the bottom of the menu. In a phone browser, select your name instead, because the layout is different.
There is no Sign out at the bottom of the app menu
Check under Settings on the menu page, then update the app. Also confirm that you are in the Amazon Shopping app. The Alexa, Photos, Prime Video and Kindle apps use different menus.
The browser still seems to remember me
After you sign out, your browser may still fill in your email address or a saved password. That comes from the browser’s own autofill and password manager, not from Amazon. On a computer that is not yours, do not let the browser save your password, and use a private browsing window so that closing it clears the session.
I think someone else is in my account
Signing out of your own device will not remove them. Change your password in Login & Security, review the Devices list and deregister anything you do not recognize, and turn on two-step verification. Amazon explains the setup on its What is Two-Step Verification? page. With it on, signing in takes both your password and a one-time code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does signing out of Amazon sign me out everywhere?
No. Amazon says that signing out on a device signs you out only on that device. To end sign-ins on other phones and computers, change your password. To remove a Kindle, Fire TV, Echo or similar device, deregister it.
Will signing out cancel my orders or my Prime membership?
No. Signing out does not close or change your account, so nothing in it is removed. Orders, memberships and payment methods are still there when you sign back in.
Does signing out hide my order history?
It hides it from anyone using that browser or app, because they would need your password to see it. It does not remove anything from the account. See whether you can delete Amazon order history for what Amazon does allow.
Is logging out the same as deregistering?
Not quite. Signing out ends the session in one browser or app. Deregistering removes a device or reading app from your Amazon account and cuts it off from your content until it is registered again.
Should I sign out on a shared or public computer?
Yes. Sign out every time you finish on a computer that other people use, and do not save your password in that browser. Amazon gives the same advice for phones: do not add your account to a device that is public or shared with people you do not know.
