Windows 11 has separate controls for text size, overall display scaling, and temporary magnification. Use Text size when menus, title bars, and icon text are too small but you do not want images and apps to become larger.
Increase text size
- Select Start > Settings > Accessibility > Text size. You can also press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility.
- Move the Text size slider right and use the sample text to judge the result.
- Select Apply.
This changes text across Windows, including items such as title bars, menus, and icon text.
Make apps and images larger too
If everything on screen is too small, open Settings > System > Display. Under Scale & layout, select a larger Scale value. This differs from Text size because it also enlarges app interfaces and images.
Use Magnifier for temporary zoom
For temporary magnification, press Windows logo key + Plus (+). Press Windows logo key + Minus (-) to zoom out and Windows logo key + Esc to close Magnifier.
Frequently asked questions
Does this only change File Explorer text?
No. Windows 11 Text size is a system-wide accessibility control. A separate File Explorer-only guide would repeat the same workflow.
Why did an app not change immediately?
Most changes apply immediately, but some apps can require signing out and back in before their interface fully reflects a new display scale.
Should I use custom scaling?
Use the built-in Scale choices first. Custom scaling has broader effects and Microsoft does not recommend it as the usual starting point.
