To change your keyboard light color in Windows 11, first confirm that the keyboard supports RGB or another form of color-changing lighting. A keyboard with a fixed white backlight can usually change brightness, but software cannot give it colors its lights do not support. For compatible devices, use Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting. Otherwise, use the controls documented by the keyboard or laptop manufacturer.
The correct method depends on the exact model and its connection to your PC. The instructions below help you choose a controller, set an effect and check what happens when the selected color does not stay in place.
Check Your Keyboard Before Changing Settings
Find the model number on the keyboard’s label, your laptop’s specifications or its supplied documentation. Look for an explicit RGB or multicolor lighting specification. “Backlit” by itself does not establish that the color is adjustable.
- RGB or multicolor hardware: check the manufacturer’s guide for its supported software and any onboard lighting shortcuts.

- No backlight: Windows settings cannot add lighting hardware. An external illuminated keyboard is a separate option.
Do not assume that a shortcut for one keyboard works on another. Use the manual for your model, particularly when the same laptop series is sold with different keyboard configurations.
Use Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting
Microsoft’s compatibility documentation identifies HID LampArray support as the basis for Dynamic Lighting. RGB hardware alone does not guarantee that Windows can control it.
- Connect the compatible keyboard and open Settings.
- Select Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
- Select the keyboard’s device card to adjust that keyboard individually.
- Set Brightness, then choose a color or effect under Effects.
The compatible keyboard should show the selected effect. Individual device settings override global settings; use a device card when you want to avoid changing all connected lighting devices. These controls are described in Microsoft’s Dynamic Lighting guide.
Use the Manufacturer’s Lighting Controls
If Windows does not list your keyboard, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. It may use a dedicated app, onboard shortcuts or preset colors. Obtain software from the manufacturer’s official support page and check model compatibility before installing it.
Example: CORSAIR iCUE
For an iCUE-compatible keyboard, connect it and follow CORSAIR’s device-lighting instructions. In iCUE 4 or newer, open the device’s Lighting Effects, add a layer with +, then configure Lighting Type and Quick Lighting Zone. Choose the effect’s available color controls. Lighting Link effects can also affect other connected compatible devices.
To keep supported effects without iCUE running, use Device Memory Mode: select the device, enable the mode, configure the effect and save it to an available memory slot. Onboard capabilities and slot counts vary by device.
If the Color Does Not Change or Keeps Switching Back
- Windows controls do nothing: check Background light control. Microsoft says a higher-priority RGB controller can override Windows; place the intended controller first.
- The color changes while gaming: an active app can take over when Compatible apps in the foreground always control lighting is enabled. Turn that option off if you want background lighting to stay in control.
- Your app does not detect the keyboard: check the exact model, supported connection mode and the manufacturer’s detection instructions. Avoid installing several controllers as a first troubleshooting step.
- The color changes when the app closes: check whether the keyboard supports an onboard profile. A software effect and a stored hardware effect are separate settings.
Common Questions
Why is there no keyboard color palette in Settings?
There is no universal Devices > Keyboard color palette. Windows lighting controls require compatible hardware. Use the manufacturer’s method when your RGB keyboard is not supported by Dynamic Lighting.
Does the backlight key change the color?
Only if your model’s manual assigns it that function. A brightness key may simply cycle through off, dim and bright. RGB effects may use different shortcuts or an app.
