How to Sort By Color in Excel 2013


Adding a fill color to a row of information in Excel 2013 allows you to visually identify a particular set of information more easily. If you establish a color coding system for how you select these fill colors, it can allow you to do some pretty helpful sorting.

Group Cells by Color in Excel 2013

This tutorial will assume that you have a spreadsheet with rows of cells that have the same fill color. Performing the steps below will group all of the rows with the same color, allowing you to view each group of rows together. Any rows without a fill color will also be grouped together.

 

Step 1: Open your spreadsheet in Excel 2013.

 

Step 2: Select all of the row numbers that you want to sort at the left side of the screen.

Step 3: Click the Home tab at the top of the window.

Step 4: Click the Sort & Filter button in the Editing section of the navigational ribbon, then click Custom Sort.

Step 5: Click the drop-down menu next to Sort by, then select the column that you want to use as the sort criteria within the sorted colors.
