The TTY feature on the iPhone 5 is meant to assist individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. It allows for communication through typing and texting.

Enable TTY on the iPhone
You will know that TTY is enabled on an iPhone because there will be a new symbol displayed in the status bar at the top of the screen. That symbol is indicated with the arrow below –
So if you need to turn on TTY on your iPhone then you can follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open the iPhone 5 Settings menu.
Step 2: Scroll down and select the Phone option.
Step 3: Scroll down and locate the TTY option, then move the slider from the left to the right. There will be green shading around the slider when it is turned on, plus the previously mentioned symbol will be displayed at the top of the screen.
