If Microsoft Word will not open on Windows, first restart the PC, then test Word with winword /safe. If Safe Mode works, investigate add-ins; if it fails, try Office repair. Test Word from Start before opening the troublesome document, so you can distinguish an application startup problem from a file problem.
This guide is for desktop Word on Windows 11. Mac, mobile, and browser versions use different controls. Keep copies of important documents and save work in other apps before restarting or repairing. Note the exact error message; “nothing happens,” an activation prompt, and a damaged-file message need different follow-up.
Check Whether Word or One Document Is Failing
Open Start, search for Word, and launch the app without double-clicking a document. If it opens, try a blank document and a different known-good file. A failure affecting only one file belongs in the file-repair section below. If no Word window opens, follow the startup checks.
Restart Windows after saving other work, then try again. Avoid repeatedly clicking the same shortcut while a previous launch is still starting. Do not force-close a Word session that contains unsaved work merely to make another window appear. If the problem persists, write down what happened during the fresh launch.
Test Word in Office Safe Mode
- Press Windows key + R to open Run.
- Type winword /safe, including the space before the slash, and select OK.
- Check the title bar for Safe Mode. Try a blank document and note whether Word stays open.

Microsoft’s Office Safe Mode guide documents this command. Office Safe Mode is separate from Windows Safe Mode; you do not need to restart Windows into a diagnostic boot mode for this test. Exit Word and launch it normally to leave Office Safe Mode. Some customizations and features are unavailable during the test.
If Windows cannot find the command, check the spelling and space first. Record the error if it persists rather than assuming the original startup problem has been diagnosed. If Safe Mode also fails, move to the repair section. If it opens reliably, investigate add-ins next.
If Safe Mode Works, Check Add-ins
- In the Safe Mode window, choose File > Options > Add-ins.
- At Manage, choose the available Word add-in category or COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Uncheck one add-in and select OK. Record its name so you can reverse the change.
- Close Word and start it normally. If it still fails, repeat with the remaining add-ins and other applicable Manage categories.
Microsoft’s Office startup-error guide recommends testing add-ins individually. If normal startup works after one is disabled, check that add-in vendor for an update. If disabling all applicable add-ins changes nothing, continue troubleshooting; Safe Mode success alone does not identify a particular add-in. On a managed PC, consult IT before altering required extensions.
Update Office If Another App Opens
If another desktop Office app opens, use it to check the shared Office installation. Open that app and choose File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. Microsoft’s Office update guide notes that Enable Updates may appear first. If Update Options is missing, updates may be controlled by an organization or a different installation type.
If none of the Office apps opens, do not keep trying a menu you cannot reach: use repair next. An available update does not prove it caused the startup failure. After updating, close the apps, launch Word again, and compare the result with the error you recorded.
Repair the Office Installation
- Close Office apps and save other work. Right-click Start and choose Installed apps in Windows 11.
- Find your Microsoft 365 or Office product, open its three-dot menu, and choose Modify. A separately installed Word app may appear under its own name.
- For a Click-to-Run installation, try Quick Repair. If it does not resolve the problem, follow the repair dialog’s Online Repair option.
- For an MSI installation, choose Repair and follow the dialog. Restart if requested, then test Word.
The choices depend on how Office was installed. Microsoft’s repair guide explains the Windows 11 path and both installation types. Repair affects the whole Office suite, even when only Word is failing. Quick Repair checks and replaces damaged files; Online Repair is the broader option. Allow the operation to finish before testing again.
If Only One Document Will Not Open
Preserve the original and work with a separate copy. When Word itself starts, Microsoft’s Open and Repair instructions provide a file-specific recovery attempt: choose File > Open > Browse, select the affected file, then use the arrow beside Open and choose Open and Repair. Use Browse, because opening from Recent does not display this dialog.
Open and Repair may recover a damaged file; it is not a guaranteed recovery and does not fix an app that cannot launch. Save any recovered version separately and compare its text, tables, and layout with a backup. A missing cloud permission or unavailable file location should be investigated separately from corruption.
If Word Still Will Not Start
Keep the exact error, Office product/version if available, Windows version, Safe Mode result, and repair result together. Give these to Microsoft support or your organization’s IT team. Avoid deleting templates or changing registry entries as an unexplained next step; preserve custom settings and document backups while the cause is investigated.
Before a reinstall, confirm which account or license belongs to the installation and how it will be installed again. Reinstallation is a later troubleshooting option, not a promise that all startup failures will disappear. Do not purchase another license solely because an existing app will not launch.
Common Questions
Can I continue working while the desktop app is broken?
If you already have an accessible document copy, a browser editor may help you continue. Our Word-to-Google-Docs guide explains conversion and keeping the original file. Check formatting afterward, and follow your organization’s rules before uploading a private work document. A browser workaround does not repair desktop Word.
Does this mean my documents are gone?
An app startup failure alone does not establish that documents were deleted. Check where the files were saved and preserve available backups. Treat app troubleshooting and recovery of an individual missing or damaged document as separate tasks.
After each change, repeat the same normal launch and file test. That comparison makes the result more useful than applying every fix at once and losing track of which change mattered.
