Connect a Windows PC to Ethernet

You need an Ethernet cable and a compatible port on the PC, or a supported USB-to-Ethernet adapter. A wired connection normally configures itself through the router.

  1. Connect one end of the cable to a LAN Ethernet port on the router, not its Internet/WAN port. Connect the other end to the PC or its adapter.
  2. On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet and check the connection status. Windows 10 also has Ethernet under Network & Internet.
  3. Open a website to check internet access. If Ethernet is disconnected, reseat both cable ends and try another cable or router LAN port.
  4. If the physical connection is recognized but internet access fails, use the network troubleshooter in Get Help and check the router’s internet connection.

Install an adapter’s driver from its manufacturer if Windows does not recognize it. Avoid changing IP addresses unless your network administrator provides the required settings. Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guide covers connection checks.
