How to Transfer iPhone Apps to an iPad (and Check Their Data)

To get an iPhone app on your iPad, redownload it from the iPad’s App Store using the Apple Account that acquired it. Open App Store > your account photo > Apps & Purchase History > Your Apps > Not on this iPad, then tap the app’s cloud download button. The app must be compatible with your iPad.

This installs an available copy from the App Store. It does not automatically copy every document, login or game save from the iPhone. Use manual downloads for apps you already own; automatic app downloads are an optional setting for purchases on other devices. These steps use Apple’s current App Store layout and recent iPadOS Settings menus, including iPadOS 27. Older versions may show Apps or Purchased instead.

Before You Download

Connect the iPad to the internet and make sure it has room for the apps and any downloaded content. Check which Apple Account appears in the App Store’s account page on each device. Purchases belong to the account that acquired them; the account used for store purchases can differ from the one used for iCloud.

Keep the iPhone’s app and its data until you have confirmed the result on the iPad. You do not need to erase an already configured iPad just to install selected apps.

Redownload Selected iPhone Apps on the iPad

1. On the iPad, open App Store and tap your account photo or the My Account button at the top.
2. Tap Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps. If Family Sharing is in use, a family member’s name can show their shared purchases.
3. Choose Not on this iPad and find the app you used on the iPhone.
4. Tap the cloud Redownload button beside the app and wait for installation to finish.
5. Open the installed app on the iPad. Check any required sign-in and confirm the content you expected to find.

Automatically Download Apps Purchased on Other Devices

1. On the iPad, open Settings > Apps > App Store. On older iPadOS versions, look for App Store directly in Settings.
2. Turn on App Downloads. This is separate from App Updates, which updates apps already installed.
3. When you acquire a compatible app on another device with the same purchase account, check whether it appears on the iPad. Use the manual method above for a missing existing app.

Bring Over Saved Data Separately

For an app that supports iCloud, check its iCloud and in-app sync settings on both devices using the same iCloud account. Some apps use their own service account instead. Sign in to that service on the iPad and follow the developer’s documented sync or export process. Recover Eligible In-App Purchases

Open the installed app and look for Restore Purchases in its store, settings or options. Use the Apple Account that made the purchase. If a charged purchase remains unavailable, contact the developer rather than paying again immediately.

If an App Is Missing or Will Not Download

Apple’s redownload troubleshooting guide identifies several causes: a different purchase account, a hidden purchase, device incompatibility, or a Family Sharing purchase that needs the correct family member’s list. Check the app’s iPad compatibility and required system version. A download cannot make an incompatible app run.
