How to Set a Vacation Response in Yahoo Business Mail

To set a vacation response in Yahoo Business Mail, sign in to your business email account, click More, click Settings, and select Vacation response. Turn on the switch next to Turn on vacation response, choose a start date and an end date, and type your message. In this layout there is no Save button; the response saves on its own.

Yahoo Business Mail is now run by Turbify, the company that took over Yahoo’s small business services, so the official steps live in the Turbify help article Create a vacation response. The mailbox itself still uses the Yahoo Mail interface. A vacation response is an automatic reply that goes to people who email you while you are away, which is why it is also called an out-of-office reply or auto-reply.

Before You Start

• Use a web browser on a computer. Turbify and Yahoo both describe this setting in the desktop web version of the mailbox. Neither help site lists steps for setting it in the Yahoo Mail mobile app.
• Sign in with the primary business address. Turbify says you can reach the sign-in page at mail.turbify.com, mail.yahoo.com, or mail. followed by your own domain name. You cannot sign in with an alias, which is an extra address that delivers to the same mailbox.
• Know which layout you have. Business Mail has two layouts. Full-featured Mail is the standard one. Basic Mail is a simplified version that Turbify says can appear when your browser is unsupported, JavaScript is off, the screen resolution is low, or the connection is slow.
• Check which mail platform your plan uses. Turbify sells business email on two platforms, Yahoo Mail and Gmail. The steps below are for the Yahoo Mail platform. A Gmail-based mailbox has its own section further down.

How to Set a Vacation Response in Full-Featured Business Mail

Use these steps if your inbox has a More option that opens a menu containing Settings.

1. Sign in to your business email account. You should land in your business inbox.
2. Click More.
3. Click Settings.
4. Select Vacation response.
5. Click the switch next to Turn on vacation response so it moves to the right.
6. Select a start date and an end date. Replies are only sent between those two dates.
7. Type the message you want senders to receive.
8. Optional: choose the option to send a different response to specific domains, then enter the domain and the alternate message. A domain is the part of an email address after the @ sign, such as your own company’s domain.

Turbify states that there is no Save button here and that the response is saved automatically after you enter it. Yahoo’s own help page for the consumer version of this screen ends with a Save step, so if your screen does show a Save button, click it before you leave the page.

How to Set a Vacation Response in Basic Mail

Use these steps if your mailbox shows a simpler page with a pull-down menu and a Go button at the top right.

1. Sign in to your business email account.
2. At the top right, select Settings from the pull-down menu, then click Go.
3. On the left, select Vacation Response.
4. Check the box next to Set automatic reply to your emails when you are out on vacation or out of office.
5. Select a start date and an end date.
6. Type your reply. Basic Mail has no rich text option for vacation responses, so the message is plain text without bold, colors, or other formatting.
7. Optional: set a different response for specific domains.
8. Click Save. Unlike the full-featured layout, Basic Mail does not keep your changes until you do.

If you would rather use the standard layout, Turbify’s help says Basic Mail has a Switch to the newest Yahoo Mail link in the upper-right corner. That help page is older than the vacation response article, so the link wording on your screen may differ.

What Senders Receive

• One reply per sender. Turbify notes that each sender gets only one vacation response between your start and end dates, no matter how many times they write during that window.
• Only inside the date range. Mail that arrives before the start date or after the end date gets no automatic reply.
• A different note for chosen domains. If you set a domain-specific response, people writing from that domain get the alternate message. Yahoo’s help page for the same feature says you can enter up to two domains.

How to Confirm It Works

Open Settings and Vacation response again. The switch or checkbox should still be on, with your dates and message in place. If your changes are missing in Basic Mail, repeat the steps and make sure you click Save at the end.

For a live test, send a message to your business address from a different email account while today’s date is inside your range. Because of the one-reply-per-sender rule, a second test from that same address will not get another reply, so do not treat that silence as a failure.

How to Edit or Turn Off the Vacation Response

The response stops by itself after the end date, so you do not have to do anything if your dates are right. To stop it early, go back to Settings and Vacation response, then reverse what you did: move the switch back in Full-featured Mail, or clear the checkbox and click Save in Basic Mail.

Turbify’s article only covers turning the response on. Yahoo’s help page for the same Yahoo Mail screen describes two more actions: select the vacation response and type new details to edit it, or scroll to the bottom, click Remove vacation response, and click Remove to delete it. A business mailbox may or may not show the Remove option.

Returning early? Change the end date or turn the response off the day you get back, so contacts are not told you are away when you are not.

If Your Business Email Runs on Gmail

Some Turbify business email accounts use Gmail instead of the Yahoo Mail interface. In that case there is no Vacation response page. Google’s help article Send an automatic reply when you’re out of office gives these steps for a computer:

1. Open Gmail and click Settings, then See all settings.
2. On the General tab, go to the Vacation responder section.
3. Select Vacation responder on.
4. Fill in the date range, subject, and message.
5. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

Troubleshooting

• There is no More option. You are probably in Basic Mail. Use the Basic Mail steps, or switch to the standard layout.
• You cannot sign in. Use the primary business email address and its password. Turbify points out that these can be different from your Turbify login ID and password, which are for managing the service.
• You opened the wrong mailbox. Turbify says you can only be signed in to one business email or Yahoo Mail account per browser. If a personal Yahoo inbox opens, sign out or use a different browser, then sign in with the business address.
• No reply arrives during a test. Check that the response is on, that today is inside the date range, and that the test address has not already received a reply.
• Formatting is missing. Basic Mail vacation responses are plain text.
• The setting is not there at all. Your mailbox may be on the Gmail platform, or you may be reading the mail in a separate program such as Outlook. Set the response in the webmail instead.

For problems these checks do not solve, Turbify asks business email users to have their account administrator contact its support team.

Tips for a Good Vacation Reply

• Say when you will be back so senders know when to expect an answer.
• Name a colleague or a shared address for urgent requests.
• Keep it short, and leave out personal details such as where you are traveling.
• Use the domain option to give coworkers more detail than outside contacts.
• Read the end date twice before you leave.
