How to View or Delete iPhone Call History (and Understand Canceled Calls)

Canceled Call on an iPhone means a call you placed ended before it connected. In most cases you hung up before the other person answered. You see the label in the Phone app when you open the details for a call in your recent calls list. It is a description of how the call ended on your side. It is not an error message, and by itself it does not show that you were blocked.

Apple does not publish a definition of this label, so the meaning here is based on how the status behaves and is widely described. What Canceled Call means

Every entry in your call history has a status. A call you made that was answered, or that reached voicemail, is normally listed as an Outgoing Call with a duration. A call you made that stopped before any of that happened is listed as a Canceled Call. Common, harmless reasons include:

• You tapped the wrong name or number and ended the call right away.
• You changed your mind while it was still ringing.
• You got tired of waiting and hung up before voicemail picked up.
• The call started by accident from Recents, a contact card, or Siri, and you stopped it.

The label can also appear when you did not end the call yourself. If the connection is lost while the call is still being set up, for example because of weak signal, the attempt ends before it connects and can be logged the same way. That is the case worth troubleshooting, and it is covered below.

You may also see the word spelled Cancelled. That is the British spelling. iPhones set to a non-US English region use it, and it means exactly the same thing.

How to see the status of a call

The status appears in the details for a call, not in the main list. On iOS 26 and later the Phone app has two layouts, Unified and Classic, and the tab names differ. Apple describes both in View and delete your call history on iPhone.

Unified layout

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap Calls.
3. Tap the call or contact you want to check. The details screen opens. If your iPhone starts a call instead, Tap Recents to Call is turned on in Settings > Apps > Phone; end the call and turn that setting off if you want a tap to open details.
4. Look at the entries near the top of the screen. Each recent call with that person is listed with its time and a status such as Outgoing Call, Canceled Call, or Missed Call.

Classic layout, and iOS 18 or earlier

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Tap Recents.
3. Tap the Info (i) button to the right of the call. Tap the button, not the name, because tapping the name calls that person again.
4. Read the status listed with the time of the call.

If you can’t find a call, tap the Filter button at the top of the list. Apple’s guide says calls can be sorted into Calls, Missed, Unknown Callers, and Spam, so the entry may be in a different list.

Canceled Call vs. other call statuses

Status	Who placed the call	What happened

A call that someone declines is a different thing. Apple’s guide to answering or declining incoming calls says a declined call goes to voicemail, and that in some countries or regions it is disconnected instead. If you stay on the line and reach their voicemail, your iPhone treats the call as connected, so you would not expect a Canceled Call label for it.

Does the other person know you called?

It depends on whether the call reached their phone before it ended.

• If their phone rang, even briefly, the call normally shows as a missed call on their end, with your number or name.
• If you ended the call before it started ringing, or the network dropped it first, their phone may show nothing at all.

There is no setting that hides a call that has already rung, and you can’t recall it. Guides disagree on this point because the result depends on timing and on the carrier, so treat a canceled call as something the other person might see.

Does Canceled Call mean you were blocked?

No. The label only records that your call ended before it connected. It says nothing about the other person’s settings.

Apple’s page on blocking phone numbers and contacts explains what a block does on an iPhone: the blocked caller can still leave a voicemail, the person who blocked them gets no notification of it, and the caller is not told about the block. That means a call to an iPhone that blocked you usually ends up at voicemail, which is a connected call from your side. The same thing happens when the other phone is off, in a Focus such as Do Not Disturb, or silencing unknown callers, so going to voicemail does not prove a block either. Why calls are canceled when you didn’t hang up

If the label shows up on calls you meant to complete, the call is failing during setup. Apple’s article If your call fails or you can’t receive calls on your iPhone lists the usual causes: a setting that is turned on, software that is out of date, or a problem with your network. In practice, look at these first:

• Weak or changing signal. One or two bars, a basement, an elevator, or a moving car.
• Airplane Mode turned on, or just turned off, so the phone has not reconnected yet.
• A carrier problem, such as a local outage or an account block.
• A wrong number format, most often on international calls. If only those fail, try turning off Dial Assist on the iPhone and dialing the full number with the country code.
• The status bar shows SOS or No Service. Regular calls can’t go out until service returns; see how to get an iPhone out of SOS mode.

How to fix calls that cancel by themselves

Work through these steps in order and place a test call after each one. They follow the Apple Support article linked above.

1. Toggle Airplane Mode. Open Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, wait five seconds, and turn it off. The iPhone reconnects to the cellular network.
2. Restart the iPhone. On an iPhone with Face ID, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears, drag it, wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Other models are covered in Apple’s Restart your iPhone.
3. Install updates. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install if an update is listed. Apple also says to check for a carrier settings update. See Update iOS on iPhone.
4. Try another location, or use Wi-Fi Calling. If signal is the problem, go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling and turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone. With Dual SIM, choose the line first. Apple notes in Make calls using Wi-Fi on iPhone that this is not available with every carrier.
5. Reset network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Read the warning below first.
6. Contact your carrier. Ask whether your account is set up for your iPhone, whether there is a local outage or a billing block, and whether your calls show errors on their system.

Warning: Reset Network Settings erases saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, along with VPN and APN settings you added. Apple’s reset settings guide adds that the device name returns to “iPhone” and cellular data roaming may be turned off. It can’t be undone, so have your Wi-Fi passwords ready. Your apps, photos, and contacts are not deleted. On that same screen, do not tap Erase All Content and Settings, which removes everything.

You’ll know the problem is fixed when a test call rings through and the new entry in your call details reads Outgoing Call with a duration.

Set Up Wi-Fi Calling When Cellular Signal Is Weak

Connect to Wi-Fi, then open Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling. If the iPhone has two SIMs, select the intended line first. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone, then enter or confirm the emergency-services address if your carrier asks for it. Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling setup guide documents these prompts. The carrier must support this feature; being connected to Wi-Fi alone does not activate it.

Open Control Center and check for Wi-Fi beside the carrier name, then make an ordinary test call. Do not call emergency services just to test the setup. If activation fails or the address is rejected, contact the carrier through its official support channels. For a Verizon line, Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling > Update Emergency Address changes that registered address; select the line first on a dual-SIM phone. How to remove a canceled call from your history

A canceled call stays in your own list until you delete it. In the Phone app, open Calls (Unified) or Recents (Classic) and swipe the call all the way to the left. To remove several, tap Edit, tap Select, choose the calls, and tap Delete.

Deleting only changes your iPhone’s list. It does not remove a missed call from the other person’s phone. Apple says the only way to get a deleted call history back is to restore the iPhone from a backup made before you deleted it.

Delete a Call on the Older iPhone 7 Layout

On the iPhone 7’s older Phone layout, open Phone > Recents > Edit, tap the red minus circle beside the intended call, then Delete and Done. Check that the intended entry disappeared and neighboring calls remain. Swiping that entry left and tapping Delete provides another route on compatible older layouts. Current Phone layouts use Calls or Recents and the selection controls described above. Removing a list entry is different from blocking the caller or deleting a saved contact.

To clear the entire older list, choose Recents > Edit > Clear > Clear All Recents only after reviewing that wider scope, then check the list. This is not required for removing one call. Deleting your history does not remove the carrier’s records or another person’s missed-call entry. Do not assume a deleted entry has an immediate Undo button; the backup-restoration limitation above still applies. Save needed call details separately before clearing them.

Frequently asked questions

Is a canceled call the same as a missed call?

No. A missed call is an incoming call that was not answered on your iPhone. A canceled call is an outgoing call from your iPhone that ended before it connected. One call can be both: canceled in your history and missed in the other person’s.

Does Canceled Call appear for FaceTime calls?

Yes, you can see the same label for a FaceTime audio or video call you ended before the other person joined. The meaning is the same.

Why does a canceled call show no duration?

Call duration counts the time a call is connected. A canceled call never connected, so there is nothing to count, no matter how long it rang.

Will I be charged for a canceled call?

Billing is set by your carrier, not by the iPhone. Carriers generally bill connected time, but check your plan or ask your carrier if it matters, especially for international numbers.

Someone else’s call to me says Canceled Call. What does that mean?

Most people only see this label on calls they placed. If it appears on a call you received, the likely explanation is that the caller hung up almost immediately. Apple does not document this case, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Can I stop accidental calls from Recents?

In the Unified layout, tapping a name opens its details instead of calling, as long as Tap Recents to Call is off in Settings > Apps > Phone. In the Classic layout, tapping a name always calls, so use the Info button when you only want to look.
