To stop sounds when typing on Android, turn off sound in the keyboard you use. In Gboard, open keyboard settings, choose Preferences, and under Key press turn off Sound on keypress. Samsung Keyboard uses Swipe, touch and feedback > Touch feedback > Sound, and Microsoft SwiftKey has a Sound & Vibration section.

Start With the Keyboard You Actually Use
Open a message or note, tap a text field, and look for the keyboard’s settings gear or toolbar menu. The settings page identifies the keyboard. A Samsung phone can use Gboard or SwiftKey instead of Samsung Keyboard, so the phone brand alone does not tell you which instructions to follow.
You need access to the active keyboard’s settings. You do not need to mute the entire phone, install another keyboard, or change notification permissions. If an app opens a different keyboard, check that keyboard separately.
Turn Off Typing Sounds in Gboard
- Tap a text field in a message or note to display Gboard.
- At the top of the keyboard, open Menu, then Settings. A visible settings gear can take you directly there.
- Select Preferences, scroll to Key press, and turn off Sound on keypress.
- Return to your note and type a few letters. The keys should no longer make their typing sound.
Google’s Gboard sound and vibration instructions list Sound on keypress, Volume on keypress and Haptic feedback on keypress as separate controls. For quieter clicks instead of silence, lower Volume on keypress. To undo the change, turn Sound on keypress back on.
Turn Off Sounds in Samsung Keyboard
- Open a text field so that Samsung Keyboard appears. Tap its settings cog.
- Choose Swipe, touch and feedback, then Touch feedback.
- Turn the Sound switch off. Leave the other feedback controls as they are unless you want to change them too.
- Return to the text field and type. Check that the keyboard clicks have stopped.
Samsung documents this route in its keyboard customization guide. The separate vibration switch controls the buzz under your fingers. Turn Sound back on in this menu to restore the clicks.
Older phones: on Samsung phones running Android 6, the switch is in Settings > Sounds and vibrations > Keyboard sound.
Turn Off Sounds in Microsoft SwiftKey
- Open the Microsoft SwiftKey app from your app list.
- Select Sound & Vibration.
- Turn Keypress sound volume off.
- Open a text field using SwiftKey and type a short line to confirm the sound is gone.
Microsoft’s SwiftKey sound and vibration guide describes these Android controls. If you prefer a softer sound, enable the sound control and use its volume slider instead. Vibration has separate settings, including using Android’s default vibration or SwiftKey’s own keypress vibration.
If You Still Hear or Feel Feedback
Check the source of the sound. Clicks while typing a message come from the keyboard. Tones in the Phone app come from the dial pad setting, and a click when you tap elsewhere on the screen is the system touch sound, found under Settings > Sound & vibration.
A buzz can remain after sound is off. If you also want to remove that sensation, turn off keyboard vibration in the keyboard’s settings. Google notes that a device-wide vibration setting can override Gboard’s vibration preference. You can keep vibration enabled while typing silently if your device supports it.
If the menu doesn’t match, open the settings from the keyboard on your screen and look for Sound, Keypress or Feedback. Follow the steps for that keyboard, not for your phone brand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this silence calls or notifications?
No. The keyboard sound switch only affects typing. Your ringtone, notifications and media keep their own volume levels.
Can I make typing silent in just one app?
No. Keyboard sound settings apply to that keyboard in every app. An app with its own built-in keypad may handle sound on its own.
Do I need to reset the phone or clear keyboard data?
No. The sound switch is all you need. Clearing keyboard data can erase your saved preferences and learned words, so don’t use it to fix typing sounds.
