To reconnect a Roku voice remote, put the Roku and remote into pairing mode. Hold the remote’s pairing button for 5 seconds, or hold Back + Home for 5 seconds if it has no pairing button, until its status light flashes. A simple infrared remote does not pair. If only TV power or volume fails, use the TV-control setup instead.
“Reprogram” usually means re-pairing a voice remote or setting up its TV controls. Start by identifying the remote and the buttons that fail. These instructions are for Roku remotes with a compatible Roku player or Roku TV; a third-party universal remote uses its own manufacturer’s setup.
Identify Your Remote and the Problem
A voice remote has a microphone or magnifying-glass button near the purple directional pad. A simple remote has no voice button and uses infrared (IR), which needs a clear path to the front of the device. No pairing button alone does not mean a remote is simple: some voice remotes pair with Back + Home.
If Home, arrows, and OK work but the TV’s volume or power does not, skip to TV controls. If nothing works, check fresh batteries or charge first, then follow the appropriate simple or voice section. Pair or Re-pair a Roku Voice Remote
Follow Roku’s voice-remote pairing instructions. Both the Roku and the remote must be ready to pair at the same time. During a new-device setup, follow the TV’s pairing prompts; for an existing device, use one of the following routes.
- With another working remote or the connected Roku mobile app, press Home and choose Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue. Follow the screen’s instructions.
- If you cannot use a working control, unplug the Roku player or TV’s power cord, wait at least 5 seconds, and reconnect it. Wait for the Home screen. Do not interrupt a software update to do this.
- Put the voice remote into pairing mode: hold its pairing button, found on the back or under the battery cover, for 5 seconds until the status light flashes. With no pairing button, hold Back + Home for 5 seconds until the light flashes.
- Wait for the pairing message, then test Home, the directional pad, and OK. If TV volume or power still fails, configure those separately below.
Use the remote’s own pairing control, not a reset button on the Roku device. Removing batteries is not a universal pairing procedure, and a rechargeable remote has no batteries for you to remove. If pairing fails, restart the device and repeat with both ends in pairing mode.
Set Up a Simple Infrared Remote
Roku’s simple-remote setup guide says these remotes are ready to use after inserting fresh matching batteries or removing the battery pull tab. Point at the front of the compatible Roku device, clear obstructions, and test the arrows and OK. There is no wireless pairing step to repeat.
Check battery orientation and replace the pair if the response is weak. An IR signal cannot pass through a closed cabinet or wall. If a replacement still does not work, confirm it is intended for your exact player or Roku TV model before assuming it is defective. Roku TV and player remotes are not automatically interchangeable.
Set Up TV Power and Volume Controls
A paired voice remote can navigate Roku while its TV controls still need setup. Only supported remotes and TVs offer these controls. Roku’s TV-control instructions provide the following route:
- Turn up the TV volume and make sure it is not muted. Point the voice remote directly at the TV.
- Press Home, then open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes.
- Choose your voice remote and select Set up remote for TV control.
- Follow the sound-test prompts and answer based on whether you hear the music. After setup, test the volume and power buttons.
Some TVs support volume but not power. HDMI-CEC, the feature that lets connected HDMI devices send control commands, may also need enabling in the TV’s settings; use its manual for the correct label. If a soundbar or receiver prevents TV detection, Roku recommends temporarily connecting the player directly to the TV during setup. This does not make the remote a universal control for every soundbar or receiver.
If the Voice Remote Still Does Not Respond
Roku’s remote troubleshooting guide distinguishes restarting a remote from its 5-second pairing command. For a remote with removable batteries, remove both, press any two buttons, reinsert them negative end first, and replace the cover. Try fresh matching batteries if needed.
For a rechargeable remote, hold the pairing button for 20 seconds; if it has none, hold Back + Home for 20 seconds. Wait for the light to stop flashing. Roku then recommends charging with the supplied cable for at least 5 hours. Re-pair using the earlier 5-second steps when ready.
If a remote feels hot, stop using it. Do not remove hot batteries. Disconnect charging if applicable and let it cool on a hard, non-flammable surface; contact Roku if it does not cool. For continuing problems, note the remote model, Roku model, which buttons fail, and whether the pairing light appears before contacting support.
Use the Roku App as a Temporary Control
The official app can help you reach pairing settings when the Roku is already accessible on your home network. Roku’s mobile-app connection guide says to put the phone and Roku on the same Wi-Fi network, open the app, and select the discovered device. It cannot be assumed to rescue initial network setup when the Roku is not connected.
