To add a column in Excel, right-click the column letter to the right of where you want the new column and choose Insert. Excel adds a blank column to the left of the one you clicked. You can also select any cell in that column and go to Home > Insert > Insert Sheet Columns.
These steps follow Microsoft’s Insert or delete rows and columns article for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016, plus Excel for the web.
How to Add a Column in Excel
- Find the column that should sit just to the right of your new column.
- Right-click that column’s letter at the top of the sheet.
- Choose Insert.
Result: A blank column appears to the left, and the existing columns shift one spot to the right. Cell references in your formulas update automatically.

Use the Home Tab Instead
Microsoft says you can select any cell within the column, then go to Home > Insert > Insert Sheet Columns. That’s handy if right-clicking is awkward on a trackpad.
How to Add Several Columns at Once
Select the same number of columns as you want to add, right-click the selection, and choose Insert. For example, select three columns to add three new ones to their left. Microsoft describes the same approach for Excel for the web.
Use a Keyboard Shortcut
Select a column, then press Ctrl + Shift + = (Ctrl + Shift + plus). Ctrl + + works on keyboards with a number pad. If you select a single cell instead of a whole column, Excel asks what to insert, so choose Entire column.

How to Add a Column to an Excel Table
If your data is formatted as a table, type a new header in the blank cell just right of the table’s last column; Excel expands the table to include it. To insert a column inside the table, right-click and choose the option to insert a column to the left or right; the exact menu labels vary by Excel version.
Formatting, Undo, and Limits
- Formatting: Microsoft says a new column picks up the formatting of the column next to it. Click the Insert Options button that appears to change that. If you don’t see it, go to File > Options > Advanced and check Show Insert Options buttons.
- Undo: Press Ctrl + Z right away if you change your mind.
- Limits: Microsoft says Excel worksheets can have up to 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows.
How to Add a Column in Excel for the Web
Right-click the column to the right of where you want the new one and choose Insert Columns (Microsoft).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I delete a column in Excel?
Right-click the column letter and choose Delete, or select a cell in it and go to Home > Delete > Delete Sheet Columns (Microsoft).
Will adding a column break my formulas?
Usually not. When you insert a column, cell references update automatically, so formulas still point to the same data. Check any formulas that use fixed ranges typed as text.
