How to Turn Off OneDrive AutoSave in Windows 11

Windows 11 has no single OneDrive AutoSave switch. To stop Word, Excel or PowerPoint saving every change, turn off the AutoSave toggle in the app’s title bar. To stop Desktop, Documents and Pictures going to OneDrive, open OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup and switch those folders off.

You saved a report to Documents, and somehow it ended up in OneDrive with a toggle in Word’s title bar saving every keystroke to the cloud. Here’s how to untangle both.

Which Auto Save Do You Mean?

“OneDrive auto save” covers two separate features that are often switched on together, plus a few smaller settings. Turning off one does not turn off the others, so match what you see to the right fix first.

Older guides mention an “Auto Save” tab in OneDrive settings with boxes for photos and screenshots. That tab came from an earlier OneDrive app; the current Windows 11 version has Sync and backup and Account pages instead.

Turn Off AutoSave in Word, Excel and PowerPoint

AutoSave is the Microsoft 365 feature that saves your changes every few seconds while you work. Microsoft’s AutoSave explainer says it’s on by default for files stored in OneDrive, OneDrive for work or school, or SharePoint Online. It isn’t a OneDrive setting, so you change it in each Office app.

For One File

1. Open the file in Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
2. Find the AutoSave switch at the upper-left corner of the window, in the title bar.
3. Click it so it reads Off. Do this before you start editing if you want the original left untouched.
4. Save manually when you’re ready with Ctrl+S or File > Save.

The app remembers this choice for that file, so it stays off the next time you open it. Other files keep their own setting.

For Every Cloud File by Default

1. In Word (or Excel, or PowerPoint), select File > Options > Save.
2. Clear the box labeled AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default on Word (the label ends with the app’s name).
3. Select OK, close the app and open it again.
4. Repeat in each of the other apps where you want AutoSave off.

Turning AutoSave off doesn’t stop OneDrive from syncing. If the file lives in OneDrive, each manual save still uploads. To keep the file off OneDrive entirely, it has to be saved in a folder that isn’t synced, which the next sections cover.

Why the AutoSave Switch Is Missing or Grayed Out

• The file is stored locally. AutoSave is disabled for files on a local path such as C:\, a file server, another cloud service or on-premises SharePoint.
• The file hasn’t been saved yet. New, unsaved documents can’t use AutoSave.
• The file uses an older format. AutoSave doesn’t work with .doc, .xls or .ppt files. Saving a copy in the current format (.docx, .xlsx or .pptx) with File > Save As (or Save a Copy) should remove this block.
• OneDrive is paused. Microsoft says AutoSave is also disabled for files in a local OneDrive folder while sync is paused.
• No subscription. AutoSave is a Microsoft 365 subscriber feature, so one-time-purchase versions of Office may not show it.

Before You Stop Folder Backup

When folder backup is on, OneDrive moves your Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders into OneDrive. That’s why a file you “saved to Documents” ends up in the cloud: the Documents folder itself now sits inside OneDrive.

Warning: when you switch a folder off, OneDrive asks where the files should stay, and the choice moves them. One option leaves them only in OneDrive and removes them from your PC; the other leaves them only on your PC and removes them from OneDrive. Before you start:

• Save and close any open files in those folders.
• Make sure files are actually downloaded. With Files On-Demand, many OneDrive files are online-only placeholders that take up no disk space. Right-click the folder in File Explorer and choose Always keep on this device, then wait for the green check marks.
• Check that your drive has room for everything you’re bringing back.

Stop OneDrive From Backing Up Desktop, Documents and Pictures

1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area at the right end of the taskbar. If it’s hidden, select the up arrow first.
2. Select the Help & Settings (gear) icon, then Settings.
3. Open the Sync and backup page and select Manage backup.
4. Turn off the toggle for each folder you want to stop backing up: Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and any others listed.
5. When the prompt appears, choose Keep the files only on my PC if you want them stored locally. Choose the OneDrive option only if you want them removed from this computer.
6. Wait for OneDrive to finish moving the files.

These steps and prompts come from Microsoft’s folder backup instructions. Exact wording can shift slightly between OneDrive updates. Windows 11 also shows the same folders at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup, under OneDrive folder syncing (select Manage sync settings).

Here’s how that plays out. Theo has 40 GB in OneDrive and wants his Documents folder off it, but Desktop can stay backed up. He sets Documents to Always keep on this device, waits for the downloads, turns off only the Documents toggle, and picks the “only on my PC” option. His Documents folder moves back to his user folder on drive C, and Desktop keeps syncing as before.

If OneDrive Won’t Stop the Backup

• “Some files couldn’t be moved”: the folder holds online-only files. Set them to Always keep on this device, then try again.
• “File is open and cannot be moved”: save and close it (check the taskbar for apps still running) and try again.
• “OneNote notebooks can’t be moved”: OneNote notebooks are stored in the cloud, so they can’t be moved to your PC. If a folder you’re taking out of backup holds a notebook, it stays in OneDrive.

Screenshots and Photos Going to OneDrive

If screenshots keep appearing in OneDrive, don’t hunt for a screenshot checkbox. Microsoft’s screenshots page says the “Save screenshots to OneDrive” option is no longer available in OneDrive settings. Screenshots reach OneDrive only when your Pictures folder is part of OneDrive, so turning off Pictures in Manage backup stops them.

Some older OneDrive versions also showed a box for importing photos and videos when you plug in a camera or phone. If you see that box in your version, clear it; if you don’t, there’s nothing to change.

Save New Files to This PC Instead

Office apps tend to suggest OneDrive when you save a new file. To keep a single file local, choose File > Save As, pick This PC or Browse, and select a folder on your drive, such as Documents after you’ve stopped its backup. Because local files don’t use AutoSave, the title-bar switch won’t turn on for them. For a file that’s already in OneDrive, Save As is replaced by Save a Copy on the File menu; use it to put a local copy on your drive.

Pause or Unlink OneDrive When You Want Everything to Stop

Sometimes you just need OneDrive to stop uploading for a while, perhaps on a metered hotspot or during a large file copy.

• Pause: Right-click the OneDrive cloud icon (or open its Help & Settings menu) and pause syncing for 2, 8 or 24 hours. Microsoft’s pause and resume page notes that sync resumes on its own when the time is up, and that OneDrive also pauses automatically in battery saver mode or on a metered network.
• Unlink this PC: Open OneDrive Settings, go to the Account page, select Unlink this PC, then confirm with Unlink account. This stops all syncing on this computer. Microsoft says you won’t lose files by unlinking; they’re still at OneDrive.com.

Check That It Worked

• Office: Open a OneDrive file you changed. The AutoSave switch should read Off. For the default setting, a newly created cloud file should also start with AutoSave off.
• Folder backup: Go back to Sync and backup > Manage backup. The folders you switched off should show as not backed up.
• File location: In File Explorer, right-click Documents, choose Properties and open the Location tab. A path like C:\Users\Theo\Documents is local; a path with OneDrive in it is still synced.
• New screenshots: Take a screenshot and check that the file appears in your local Pictures folder with no OneDrive sync status icon beside it.

Turn It Back On

1. For Office, click the AutoSave switch back to On, or tick the File > Options > Save box again and restart the app.
2. For folders, open OneDrive Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup.
3. Turn on any folder marked Not backed up.
4. Select Save changes.

OneDrive Saving Questions

Does stopping folder backup delete my files?

Not if you choose to keep the files on your PC, though that choice does remove them from OneDrive. That matters if you open those files on another device: they won’t be there anymore.

Why is OneDrive still using so much space after I stopped backup?

Does turning off AutoSave lose my work if Word crashes?

You lose the constant cloud saves, so save often with Ctrl+S. Microsoft says AutoRecover still works when AutoSave is off, so after a crash Word can offer your latest changes in the Document Recovery pane. Will this change OneDrive on my other computers?

Folder backup is set per PC, so another computer keeps its own setting. The Office default checkbox is also set per app on each computer.
