To turn on a disabled touchscreen in Windows 11, right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, then right-click HID-compliant touch screen > Enable device. The same menu lets you turn it off with Disable device.
Your computer or monitor must already have touch-capable hardware. A Windows setting cannot add touch to an ordinary display. This guide covers the Windows control and what to check when it is missing or touch still fails.
Before You Change Touch Input
Have a working mouse or touchpad and keyboard available, especially before disabling touch. Save open work before any restart. On a work or school PC, ask IT if device controls are unavailable or you cannot approve an administrator prompt.
Check your exact model’s specifications, rather than assuming every laptop in a product family has a touchscreen. You can also search Windows for View pen and touch info and inspect Pen and touch under Device specifications. If Windows reports no touch input on a model sold with touch, investigate its drivers instead of treating that message as proof the hardware is absent.

Enable the Touchscreen in Windows 11
Follow Microsoft’s touchscreen enable and disable instructions:
- Right-click the taskbar’s Start button and choose Device Manager. Its window lists hardware categories.
- Expand Human Interface Devices using the arrow beside it.
- Right-click HID-compliant touch screen, then choose Enable device if offered.
- If several touchscreen entries appear, repeat for each. Identify the touchscreen entries specifically; leave unrelated input devices alone.
Try tapping a large on-screen button, then scrolling in a familiar app. If the menu offers Disable device instead, Windows already has that device enabled. Enabling it again is not the solution to every touch problem.
Turn the Touchscreen Off, or Undo the Change
Return to the same touchscreen entry in Device Manager and choose Disable device. Approve the confirmation if shown. Test that taps stop registering, and use your other input devices.
To reverse this, choose Enable device on the same entry. Disabling touch does not remove the screen’s display function, and it is different from disabling a touchpad. Avoid Uninstall device when your goal is simply to switch touch off.
Do not assume every touch accessory will keep working. Microsoft warns that disabling touch on Surface also disables accessories such as Surface Pen, Surface Dial, and the Windows Touch Keyboard. Read its Surface touchscreen guidance before troubleshooting that hardware.
Enable or Disable Touch in Windows 10
Have a working mouse or touchpad and keyboard ready. In Windows 10, right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and right-click HID-compliant touch screen. Choose Disable device to turn touch off and approve the prompt if shown; choose Enable device to turn it back on. Repeat only for additional touchscreen entries, then check that taps stop or start registering as intended. Microsoft’s touchscreen instructions apply to Windows 10 and 11. Disabling touch is different from uninstalling the driver or disabling the touchpad.
If Touch Still Does Not Work
Save your work and restart the PC. If touch remains unresponsive, Microsoft’s Windows touchscreen troubleshooting steps recommend Windows Update and another restart after updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products, then check Optional updates under Additional options.
- Install the applicable updates, return to Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
- Finish installation, restart, and test touch again.
If the device entry is missing, has an error, or the problem continues, use the computer manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model. Do not disable random HID devices or download drivers from an unidentified driver site.
Driver removal is a separate troubleshooting procedure. Microsoft’s Surface instructions specifically warn against uninstalling drivers on Surface Pro X, because restoring them requires a full reset. A factory reset is not a prerequisite for enabling touch.
What If Touch Works but Taps Land in the Wrong Place?
That is an accuracy issue rather than an enable switch. For supported Dell touchscreen systems, Dell documents Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Tablet PC Settings > Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input. Select the correct display, choose Calibrate > Touch input, follow the crosshairs without changing resolution, then save the calibration data.
