How to Keep a Windows 11 Laptop On with the Lid Closed

To keep a Windows 11 laptop running with the lid closed, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, set When I close the lid to Do nothing under Plugged in, and select Save changes. Connect the charger and external monitor and make sure the monitor shows your desktop before you close the lid.

These steps cover Windows 11 Home and Pro on any laptop, and the Control Panel route is the same in Windows 10. The lid setting only controls what closing the lid does. Idle sleep timers, battery power, heat and your laptop’s hardware can still put it to sleep or turn the screen off, so the sections below cover those too.

Before You Close the Laptop

  • Connect the charger, external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Check that the monitor shows your desktop while the lid is open. If it stays blank, get help with using HDMI on a Windows 11 laptop.
  • Bluetooth keyboards and mice must already be paired and working, since you won’t be able to reach the built-in keyboard once the lid is shut.
  • Save your work before testing. Leave the lid open while you change settings.
  • Put the laptop on a hard, flat surface or a stand with the vents clear. Follow your laptop maker’s guidance about using it closed. A closed lid can hold in heat, and changing the lid setting doesn’t stop the laptop from getting hot.
  • Sleep or shut down the laptop before putting it in a bag. With Do nothing selected, closing the lid alone can leave it running.

For a bag or a long trip, hibernate is often the better choice; see whether to use sleep or hibernate.

Change the Lid Action in Control Panel

This route works on every Windows 11 laptop. HP’s Windows 11 guide documents the same path and the plugged-in Do nothing setting.

  1. Open Start, search for Control Panel and open it. You can also press Windows key + R, type powercfg.cpl and press Enter to jump straight to Power Options.
  2. In Category view, select Hardware and Sound > Power Options. If Control Panel shows a list of icons, select Power Options directly.
  3. Select Choose what closing the lid does on the left. The page with power button and lid settings opens.
  4. Find the When I close the lid row. Under Plugged in, choose Do nothing.
  5. For a desk setup, keep On battery set to Sleep or your previous choice. Change that column only if you also intend to keep the laptop awake without its charger.
  6. Select Save changes. The change takes effect right away; no restart is needed.
  7. With the monitor working and the charger connected, close the lid. The external monitor should stay on, and you can keep working with the external keyboard and mouse.

If the menus are grayed out, select Change settings that are currently unavailable at the top of the page. Microsoft documents this page in its lid and power-button instructions. A managed work or school computer may block changes; ask its administrator if the controls stay locked.

Which lid action should you pick?

Lid action What happens when you close the lid Good for
Do nothing The laptop keeps running; the external monitor stays on Desk setup with a monitor, downloads, music
Turn off the display The laptop keeps running, but displays turn off Downloads or music when you don’t need a screen (if your PC offers it)
Sleep The laptop sleeps Most travel and everyday use
Hibernate Your work is saved to the drive and the laptop powers off Long periods away without a charger
Shut down The laptop turns off Rarely needed

The choices you see depend on your hardware. Hibernate appears only when it is turned on.

Change the Lid Action in Settings

Recent Windows 11 updates also put the lid choice in the Settings app. If you don’t see the section below, use the Control Panel steps above.

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select System > Power & battery.
  3. Expand the lid section. It is named Lid & power button controls on some PCs and Lid, power & sleep button controls on others, as Acer’s Windows 11 instructions show.
  4. In the closing-the-lid row, open the Plugged in menu and choose Do nothing. The change saves automatically.

Use a Command Instead

If you set up several laptops or prefer the keyboard, the same setting has a powercfg name, LIDACTION, where 0 means Do nothing and 1 means Sleep, as listed in Microsoft’s lid switch close action reference.

  1. Right-click Start and select Terminal (Admin), then select Yes.
  2. Type powercfg /setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_BUTTONS LIDACTION 0 and press Enter. “AC” means plugged in.
  3. Type powercfg /setactive SCHEME_CURRENT and press Enter to apply it.

To undo it, run the first command again with 1 at the end instead of 0, then the second command. Use /setdcvalueindex instead of /setacvalueindex only if you mean to change the battery setting.

Choose What Appears on the External Monitor

The lid action and the display mode are separate settings. With the lid open and the monitor connected, press Windows + P:

  • Second screen only: use the external display alone. This is the usual choice before closing the lid.
  • Extend: spread the desktop across both screens while the laptop is open. When you close the lid, Windows moves everything to the external monitor.
  • Duplicate: show the same picture on both displays.
  • PC screen only: use the laptop screen alone. Don’t pick this before closing the lid, or the monitor goes dark.

If Windows does not find the monitor, open Settings > System > Display, expand Multiple displays and select Detect. These options are documented in Microsoft’s multiple-monitor guide. With more than one external screen, follow the steps to set up multiple monitors on Windows 11.

If the pointer seems to vanish after you switch display modes, you can get your cursor back on a laptop.

How to Undo the Change

Write down your previous choices before you change them. To bring back sleep when you close the lid, return to Choose what closing the lid does, set the column you changed back to Sleep, and select Save changes. You don’t need to reset the whole power plan.

If the Screen Goes Blank or the Laptop Still Sleeps

  • It happens as soon as you close the lid: reopen it and make sure you saved Do nothing in the column for your current power source. Unplugging the charger switches to the On battery setting.
  • It happens after several idle minutes: check Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. The Turn my screen off after and Make my device sleep after timers work separately from the lid action. Raise the Plugged in values you need, or choose Never for a long task, and restore a shorter time when you finish. For more help, read about adjusting Windows 11 power and sleep settings or Microsoft’s current timeout instructions.
  • The screen locks or dims when you walk away: some laptops have presence sensing. Look for Presence sensing under Settings > Privacy & security, or in the power and display settings, and turn off the option that locks or turns off the screen when you leave.
  • The monitor is blank even with the lid open: check its power, input and cable. Try another cable or port, or connect the display directly instead of through a dock. Pressing Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B resets the graphics driver. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide covers more checks.
  • The setting won’t stick: make sure you changed the active power plan. PC maker utilities can override Windows power settings, so check the power app that came with your laptop.
  • It shuts off after a while closed: the laptop may be overheating. Raise it on a stand, clear the vents and use the charger that came with it.
  • The problem persists only when closed: install Windows updates and your model’s display, chipset and dock drivers from the manufacturer’s support site. Some hardware or organization policies limit closed-lid use.

If the laptop powers off completely instead of sleeping, you can stop your computer from turning off by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep downloads or music running without a monitor?

Yes. Do nothing keeps the laptop running when you close the lid even with no display attached. Idle sleep, the app itself and the network connection can still interrupt a task, so check the sleep timer too. Keeping a laptop awake uses more power, so change the battery column only when you need to.

Is it bad to use a laptop with the lid closed?

Not for everyday work, as long as it gets enough airflow. For gaming, video exports or other heavy work that makes the fans run hard, keeping the lid open lets more heat escape.

Why does the external monitor go dark when I close the lid?

Usually the lid action is still set to Sleep for your current power source, or the display mode is PC screen only. Set Do nothing under Plugged in and choose Second screen only or Extend with Windows + P.

Will the laptop battery drain while it’s plugged in?

It shouldn’t with the original charger. If the battery level drops while plugged in, the charger may be too weak for the laptop and monitor setup.

If the external monitor goes dark after a few idle minutes, change the screen timeout in Windows 11 for the Plugged in column.
