How to Close All Open Tabs on iPad in Safari

To close all open Safari tabs on your iPad, tap the Tabs button, touch and hold Done, then tap Close All [number] Tabs. This closes every tab in the Tab Group you are viewing. Tabs in other Tab Groups, in Private Browsing, and in other Safari profiles or windows stay open until you clear them separately.

These steps follow Apple’s iPad User Guide for iPadOS 27 and cover Safari only. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge keep their own tabs and have their own controls. Button positions can differ on older iPadOS versions and with the Compact Tab Bar layout, so look for the button names given here if your screen looks different.

Before You Close Everything

Closing a tab ends whatever was happening on that page. Take a minute to check these points first.

  • Finish or save unsent work. A half-filled form, an unsent message, or a draft typed into a webpage may not come back when you reopen the page.
  • Bookmark pages you still need. Safari keeps a list of recently closed tabs, but it is a convenience list and not a backup.
  • Check which Tab Group is selected. A Tab Group is a named set of tabs, such as Work or Recipes. Close All only affects the group on screen, so select the right one first.
  • Remember iCloud. Apple says Safari can keep tabs and Tab Groups updated across devices signed in to the same Apple Account, so a Tab Group you empty on the iPad can change on your iPhone or Mac too.

How to Close All Safari Tabs on an iPad

  1. Open Safari. If you use Tab Groups, tap the Show Sidebar button and select the group you want to clear.
  2. Tap the Tabs button. It looks like two overlapping squares and sits near the top-right corner of the toolbar. Safari shows a grid of page previews, called the tab overview.
  3. Touch and hold Done. Keep your finger on it until a menu appears. A quick tap only closes the overview.
  4. Tap Close All [number] Tabs. The number is how many tabs will close, so read it before you tap. If Safari asks you to confirm, tap the close option again.

The previews disappear, and Safari typically leaves a single start page in that group. Apple describes this method in Open and close tabs in Safari on iPad.

Many guides also describe a shortcut: touch and hold the Tabs button itself, then pick the Close All option from the menu. Apple’s iPad guide does not list that route, so use the Done method if the menu does not offer it.

Close Tabs in Other Tab Groups, Profiles, and Windows

If pages are still open after Close All, they belong to a different place in Safari. Work through each one that applies to you.

  • Other Tab Groups: open the sidebar, tap the next group, and repeat the steps. You do not have to delete a group to empty it. Apple explains groups in Organize your tabs in Safari on iPad.
  • Other profiles: a Safari profile, such as Work or Personal, has its own tabs and Tab Groups. Switch profiles and repeat the steps in each.
  • Other Safari windows: iPad can open more than one Safari window. Touch and hold the Safari icon on the Home Screen or in the Dock, tap Show All Windows, and clear each window.
  • Tabs on another device: in the sidebar, tap iCloud Tabs, touch and hold a link from another device, then choose Close. This closes one remote tab at a time.

Close Private Browsing Tabs

Private Browsing tabs are kept apart from your regular tabs, and leaving Private Browsing does not close them. Apple’s guide says the sites you have open there stay open and Private Browsing locks.

  1. Tap the Show Sidebar button, then tap Private. If you do not see it, tap the Back button at the top of the sidebar.
  2. Unlock Private Browsing with your passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID if asked.
  3. Tap the Tabs button, touch and hold Done, and tap the Close All option.
  4. Open the sidebar again and tap a Tab Group to return to regular browsing.

See Apple’s Private Browsing instructions for iPad for the lock settings.

Close One Tab or a Few Tabs

To close a single page, tap the Tabs button, then tap the Close button (the X) in the upper-right corner of that preview.

To close a handful at once, open the sidebar, tap the More button, and tap Select Tabs. Select the tabs, touch and hold one of them, then tap Close [x] Tabs and tap Done.

Reopen a Tab You Closed by Mistake

Touch and hold the New Tab button (the plus sign), then choose a page from the list of recently closed tabs. Tabs come back one at a time, and Private Browsing tabs are not saved to History, so do not count on recovering them. Our guide on how to restore tabs on an iPad covers more recovery options.

Troubleshooting

  • No menu appears on Done: make sure the tab overview is open, then hold Done for a second or two without lifting your finger.
  • The toolbar looks different: with the Compact Tab Bar, tabs and the address field share one row and menus can vary. You can switch layouts in Settings > Apps > Safari under Tabs. See how to show or hide the tab bar on an iPad.
  • The number is lower than expected: the count covers only the current Tab Group. Check the other places listed above.
  • Tabs reappear: if another device signed in to the same Apple Account still has those pages open, they can show under iCloud Tabs. Close them on that device.
  • Safari is frozen: closing tabs will not help if the app does not respond. Follow our guide to close and reopen an iPad app, then try again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does closing all tabs delete my Safari history?

No. Closing tabs only removes the open pages. Your history, cookies, and cached website data stay on the iPad until you clear them. To remove those as well, see how to clear cookies and cache on iPad.

Can Safari close old tabs automatically?

Safari’s settings have included a Close Tabs option that removes tabs you have not viewed for a day, a week, or a month. Look for it in Settings > Apps > Safari. Apple’s current iPad guide does not describe this setting, so its name and location may differ on your iPad. For the iPhone version, see how to automatically close tabs after one week in Safari on an iPhone.

Is closing all tabs the same as quitting Safari?

No. Quitting Safari from the app switcher stops the app, but it is not how you close webpages. Your tabs normally return when you open Safari again. Apple also notes that quitting apps you are not using does not extend battery life.

Will closing tabs make my iPad faster?

It makes Safari easier to navigate, but Apple does not promise a speed gain from closing tabs. If Safari itself stops responding, quitting and reopening the app is the documented fix.

Do these steps work on an iPhone?

Safari on iPhone offers a similar Close All Tabs option, but the buttons sit in different places. Use our guide to close all open tabs on iPhone for that layout.

Next Step

Once the Tab Groups you care about are empty, tap the New Tab button to start fresh. If you tend to collect tabs, save pages you want later as bookmarks or in a Tab Group so the next cleanup takes one touch-and-hold.
