To get back to the desktop in Windows 11, press Windows key + D. All open windows minimize and the desktop appears; press it again to bring them back. You can also select the thin strip at the far right end of the taskbar. If the desktop itself looks wrong, such as missing icons, a missing taskbar or a different background, use the fixes further down.
This covers Windows 11 Home and Pro on desktops, laptops and 2-in-1 PCs. It lists the quick ways to show the desktop, how to get back from another virtual desktop, and how to fix missing icons, files and taskbars. Shortcuts come from Microsoft’s keyboard shortcut list, and the icon fixes from Microsoft Support.
Quick Ways to Show the Desktop
| Method | What it does | How to undo it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows key + D | Shows the desktop | Press Windows key + D again |
| Windows key + M | Minimizes all windows | Press Windows key + Shift + M |
| Windows key + comma (,) | Peeks at the desktop while you hold the keys | Let go of the keys |
| Windows key + Home | Minimizes every window except the active one | Press Windows key + Home again |
| Show desktop strip on the taskbar | Shows the desktop | Select the strip again |
| Three-finger swipe down on a touchpad | Shows the desktop | Select an app on the taskbar |
Windows key + D is the best choice for most people because the same keys bring everything back exactly where it was. Windows key + M is useful when you want windows to stay minimized, and Windows key + comma is handy for a quick look at a file on the desktop.
You can also right-click Start (or press Windows key + X) and select Desktop from the menu. Microsoft’s touch gestures page lists the three-finger swipe down, and notes that some touchpad gestures need a precision touchpad.
Use the Show desktop button

- Move your mouse to the far right end of the taskbar, past the clock and the notification icons. A thin strip is there; hover over it and a “Show desktop” tooltip appears.
- Select it. All windows minimize.
- Select it again to restore them.
If nothing happens, the option may be off:
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Check Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop. Microsoft’s taskbar settings guide says this minimizes open windows and restores them when you select it again.

On multiple monitors, the strip works on the main taskbar.
Get Back to Your Main Desktop
If you switched to another virtual desktop, your windows can seem to vanish. They are still open on the first desktop. Microsoft lists these shortcuts:
- Windows key + Ctrl + Left arrow or Right arrow switches between desktops you’ve created.
- Windows key + Tab opens Task View, where you can pick the desktop you want.
- Windows key + Ctrl + F4 closes the desktop you’re on. Its open windows move to the next desktop, so nothing closes.
- On a touchpad, swipe left or right with four fingers.
For more, read about switching between desktops in Windows 11.
Fix a Desktop That Looks Wrong
All your icons are gone
Microsoft’s desktop icons guide says your icons may only be hidden:
- Right-click an empty space on the desktop. The context menu opens.
- Select View, then make sure Show desktop icons is checked. Your icons reappear if they were hidden.

If you use more than one monitor, check the other screens too. Icons can end up on a display you are not looking at.
Icons are huge, tiny or scattered
- Right-click an empty space on the desktop and select View.
- Choose Medium icons for the standard size, or Large icons or Small icons.
- To line them up again, check Auto arrange icons and Align icons to grid in the same menu.
You can also hold Ctrl and turn the mouse wheel on the desktop to resize icons, as Microsoft’s desktop icon customization page describes. Windows does not keep a saved copy of your old icon layout, so after a reboot you have to drag icons back where you want them.
Showing the desktop is also the quickest way to see sticky notes on your Windows 11 desktop that are hidden behind open windows.
This PC, Recycle Bin or Network is missing
- Right-click the desktop and select Personalize, then Themes. The Themes page opens.
- Select Desktop icon settings under Related settings. The Desktop Icon Settings window opens.
- Check the icons you want, then select Apply and OK.
See also how to add desktop icons in Windows 11 and how to show This PC on the desktop.

If a theme you applied changed these icons, uncheck Allow themes to change desktop icons in the same window.
Your files and shortcuts disappeared after setting up OneDrive
OneDrive can back up your Desktop folder. If the backup location is wrong, your desktop may be showing a different folder. To fix it:
- Open File Explorer and expand your OneDrive folders.
- Right-click the Desktop folder and select Properties.
- Open the Location tab and select Move.

- Choose the folder that has your files, select Select Folder, then Apply. Select Yes if Windows asks to move the files.
If there’s no Location tab, you’re looking at the wrong Desktop folder, so check the others.
The desktop and taskbar are both missing
Restarting File Explorer reloads the desktop and taskbar without closing your files:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes page, select Windows Explorer, then select Restart task. The screen flickers and the desktop comes back.

- If Windows Explorer isn’t listed, select Run new task (on older versions, File > Run new task), type explorer, and press Enter.
If only the taskbar is gone, get the taskbar back in Windows 11 with these steps.
Other quick fixes
- An app covers the whole screen: press F11 or Esc to leave full screen, or press Windows key + Down arrow to shrink the window.
- Everything is too big or small: set Scale to the recommended value in Settings > System > Display.
- The colors or overall look changed: go to Settings > Personalization > Themes and select the Windows (light) or Windows (dark) theme to return to the standard look.
- The background changed: choose a new one in Settings > Personalization > Background, or set a different background for each monitor.
- You’re on a work or school PC: your organization can hide desktop items with a policy. If the fixes above don’t stick, ask your IT department.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Windows 11 have tablet mode?
Not as a separate mode like Windows 10. For the older manual switch, read about turning on Tablet mode in Windows 10. On 2-in-1 PCs, Windows adjusts the taskbar automatically when you fold the keyboard back, so a desktop that looks different on a 2-in-1 is usually just the touch layout.
Can I add a Show Desktop icon to the taskbar?
Yes. Right-click an empty part of the desktop and select New > Shortcut. For the location, type explorer.exe shell:::{3080F90D-D7AD-11D9-BD98-0000947B0257}, select Next, name it Show Desktop, and select Finish. Then right-click the new shortcut, select Show more options > Pin to taskbar. The built-in strip at the far right of the taskbar and Windows key + D do the same job without any setup.
Why did Windows key + M not bring my windows back?
Windows key + M only minimizes. Use Windows key + Shift + M to restore the windows, or use Windows key + D, which works both ways.
How do I get my desktop back to the way it was?
Windows doesn’t save a copy of your old layout. Use the fixes above to restore hidden icons, system icons, files from OneDrive, the default theme and your background.
