How to Get the Taskbar Back in Windows 11

If the Windows 11 taskbar disappeared, first move your mouse to the screen edge where the taskbar sits (usually the bottom). If it slides up, it’s set to hide automatically: right-click it, select Taskbar settings, expand Taskbar behaviors, and uncheck “Automatically hide the taskbar.” If it doesn’t appear at all, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager. If you change your mind later, you can hide the taskbar in Windows 11 again with the same setting.

These fixes apply to Windows 11 Home and Pro with current updates, including versions 24H2 and 25H2. Work through them in order: the first two solve most cases, and the later ones are for a taskbar that stays missing or keeps breaking.

Quick Checks First

• Press the Windows key. If Start opens, Windows is working and only the taskbar is hidden or stuck. Pressing it can also redraw a taskbar that shows up empty.
• Look at every edge of every screen. The taskbar may be on the top or side, or on another monitor.
• Leave full screen. Videos, games and browsers in full-screen mode cover the taskbar. Press Esc or F11, or use the app’s own full-screen button, to return to the normal view.

Turn Off Auto-Hide

Auto-hide slides the taskbar off the screen until your pointer touches the bottom edge. It’s the most common reason the taskbar seems to vanish.

1. Move the mouse to the bottom edge of the screen (or the edge where your taskbar sits) so the taskbar appears, then right-click it and select Taskbar settings. If the bar will not appear, press Windows + I to open Settings, then choose Personalization > Taskbar.
2. Select Taskbar behaviors.
3. Uncheck Automatically hide the taskbar.

The taskbar slides up and stays on screen. Microsoft lists this setting in its Customize the taskbar in Windows guide. If the box was already unchecked, auto-hide isn’t the problem, so move on to the next fix.

Restart Windows Explorer

Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) runs the taskbar, Start button and desktop. If the taskbar doesn’t appear at the screen edge, or it’s there but frozen, restart Windows Explorer. Save your work and let any file copies finish first.

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. There are also other ways to open Task Manager in Windows 11.
2. On the Processes page, find Windows Explorer. Type its name in the search box if needed.
3. Right-click it and select Restart. You can also select it and click Restart task at the top of the window.

The desktop may briefly disappear while Explorer restarts. Check that the taskbar returns and its buttons respond. If Windows Explorer is not listed, select Run new task, type explorer.exe, and select OK. Microsoft includes this route in its blank-screen troubleshooting guide.

If the bar comes back but keeps sliding out of view, follow these steps to stop the taskbar from hiding.

If the screen goes black or flickers

The same Microsoft guide lists two display resets. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver; you hear a beep or see the screen flash. If a projector or second monitor was recently unplugged, press Windows + P and choose PC screen only so Windows draws the desktop, and its taskbar, on your main screen.

If the Taskbar Is Missing on a Second Monitor

Windows can show the taskbar on only your main display. Per Microsoft’s taskbar guide:

1. Right-click the taskbar on your main screen and select Taskbar settings.
2. Expand Taskbar behaviors.
3. Check Show my taskbar on all displays.

To keep a single taskbar on a different screen instead, change the main display in Windows 11.

If the Taskbar Is There but Empty

If you see the bar but icons, the search box or the clock are gone, they may be switched off rather than broken. Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and check these:

• Taskbar items: turn Task view and Widgets back on, and set Search to a search box or icon instead of Hide.
• System tray icons and Other system tray icons: turn on the icons you want next to the clock.
• Pinned apps: if your apps are gone, add them back with how to pin to the taskbar in Windows 11.

If an older Dell computer shows a separate row of big shortcut icons at the top of the screen, that is the Dell Dock, and you can uninstall the Dell Dock from Settings.

Other Things to Check

• Full-screen app: use the app’s full-screen control to return to the desktop. F11 or Esc works in some apps, but shortcuts vary. Here’s more on going full screen on Windows 11.
• Taskbar on another edge or monitor: look at the top and sides of every screen. If your PC has the position control, put it back at the bottom by opening Taskbar behaviors and set Taskbar position to Bottom. Microsoft added that setting in the August 2026 update (KB5120998), and it is rolling out gradually. If you don’t see it, your taskbar can only sit at the bottom. • Restart the PC: save work, then restart normally if the taskbar still does not respond.
• Updates: install pending updates in Settings > Windows Update, and restart if prompted. If the taskbar broke right after an update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates and remove the most recent one.
• Work or school PC: an administrator can control taskbar settings. Ask your IT team if a setting is greyed out.

2-in-1 PC used as a tablet: the taskbar can collapse when the keyboard is folded back or detached. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to expand it. To stop this, clear Optimize taskbar for touch interactions when this device is used as a tablet under Taskbar behaviors (the taskbar guide shows where it is). If the Taskbar Keeps Disappearing

When the taskbar vanishes again after every restart, damaged system files or a bad update are more likely than a setting.

Repair system files

1. Press Windows + S, type cmd, and select Run as administrator. Select Yes if asked.
2. Type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter. It can take several minutes.
3. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter. Keep the window open until the scan reaches 100%.

Reinstall Windows through Windows Update

If repairs don’t help, Windows 11 can reinstall itself while keeping your apps, files and settings.

1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
2. Next to Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.

3. Choose whether to restart automatically after the install, then select OK.

Windows downloads and installs a repair copy of your current version. The reinstall the current version of Windows page explains the process. Back up important files first anyway, and keep the PC plugged in.

How to Confirm It Worked

The taskbar should stay visible at the bottom of the screen, the Start button should open Start, and the clock and system tray should update. Restart the PC once to make sure it survives a reboot. If you later want the extra screen space again, turn Automatically hide the taskbar back on.
