To find your downloads on Windows 11, press Windows key + E to open File Explorer and select Downloads in the left pane. Files you download in a browser go there by default. In Edge, Chrome or Firefox, you can also press Ctrl + J to see a list of recent downloads and open the folder for any file.

How to Open the Downloads Folder in Windows 11
- File Explorer: press Windows key + E and select Downloads in the left pane or on the Home page. Microsoft says the known folders, including Downloads, are pinned to Quick access by default in Windows 11 version 22H2 and later.
- Run box: press Windows key + R, type shell:downloads, and press Enter.
- Folder path: the folder is at C:\Users\YourName\Downloads, where YourName is your user folder.
If you unpinned Downloads from Quick access, right-click it under This PC or in your user folder and select Pin to Quick access to bring it back.

How to Find Your Newest Download
In the Downloads folder, select Sort > Date modified and choose descending order, so the newest files are at the top. You can also choose View to switch between icons, a list and details, which makes dates easier to compare.
Looking for something you opened rather than downloaded? Windows keeps a list of recent files in Windows 11 for exactly that, and you can empty it by clearing recent files.
How to Find a Download From Your Browser
Every major browser keeps a list of recent downloads, with a way to jump to the file:
- Microsoft Edge: press Ctrl + J, which Microsoft’s Edge keyboard shortcuts list as Open Downloads.
- Google Chrome: select More > Downloads, or press Ctrl + J. Google’s Download a file help page says clicking a file’s name opens it in your default app for that file type.
- Mozilla Firefox: press Ctrl + J, the Downloads shortcut in Mozilla’s keyboard shortcuts list, or select the Downloads button in the toolbar.

Removing a file from Chrome’s Downloads page only removes it from the list, not from your computer.
How to Check Where Your Browser Saves Files
If a file isn’t in Downloads, your browser may be set to save somewhere else:
- Edge: select Settings and more > Settings > Downloads. The folder path is listed under Location.
- Chrome: select More > Settings > Downloads. Click Change to pick a new folder, or turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading. Chrome uses \Users\<username>\Downloads on Windows unless you change it.

How to Search for a Downloaded File
If you remember part of the file name, Microsoft’s Find your files and apps guide suggests searching from File Explorer. To search only your downloads, open the Downloads folder first and type in the search box. Searching from This PC is slower but more thorough. You can also select Search on the taskbar, type the name, and choose the Documents tab to filter results.
What to Do If a Download Is Missing
- Check the browser’s download list with Ctrl + J. The download may have failed, been paused, or been blocked.
- Check the browser’s download location setting, as shown above.

How to Delete Downloaded Files in Windows 11
Open the Downloads folder, select a file (hold Ctrl to select several), and press Delete. Check what you’ve selected before you select everything.
Files deleted normally from a local drive usually go to the Recycle Bin. Check the confirmation message, especially on removable drives or network locations where deletion can be permanent. Avoid Shift + Delete if you want the ordinary recovery path.
Removing an entry from a browser’s download history does not delete its saved file. Deleting a downloaded file also does not uninstall an app that you previously installed from it.
