How to Change the Taskbar Color in Windows 11

To change the taskbar color in Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Colors, set Choose your mode to Dark (or Custom with Windows mode set to Dark), pick an accent color, and turn on “Show accent color on Start and taskbar.” That last switch is grayed out while Windows uses light mode, which is the most common reason this doesn’t work.

This guide covers Windows 11 Home and Pro using the built-in Settings app, with no extra software. It shows how to pick a preset or exact custom color, match the taskbar to your wallpaper, get a plain black or white taskbar, fix a grayed-out switch, and go back to the default. Menu names come from Microsoft’s Colors support page, checked in October 2026.

How Taskbar Color Works in Windows 11

Windows 11 doesn’t have a separate “taskbar color” setting. The taskbar’s look comes from two settings on the Colors page:

  • Your Windows mode (Light or Dark). In Light mode the taskbar is light gray; in Dark mode it’s dark gray.
  • Show accent color on Start and taskbar. When this is on, the taskbar takes on your accent color instead.

Microsoft’s Personalize your Colors in Windows page explains the catch: light mode doesn’t personalize the color of the Start menu, taskbar and action center. That option is only available in dark and custom modes. The accent switch applies your color to all three at once, so you can’t color the taskbar alone.

How to Change the Taskbar Color

  1. Right-click the desktop and select Personalize, or press Windows + I to open Settings and select Personalization. Result: Personalization settings open.
  2. Select Colors. Result: the mode, accent color and transparency options appear.
  3. Set Choose your mode to Dark. To keep apps light, choose Custom, then set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark and Choose your default app mode to Light. Result: the accent switch for Start and taskbar becomes available.
  4. Under Accent color, choose Manual, then pick a color from Recent colors or Windows colors. Result: the color is selected as your accent.
  5. Turn on Show accent color on Start and taskbar. Result: the taskbar changes to your color right away, with no restart.

Use an exact custom color

If none of the swatches fit, select View colors next to Custom colors. In the color picker, select More to show the hex and RGB fields, type the code you want (for example, a brand color), and select Done. Make sure the Start and taskbar switch is still on.

Match the taskbar to your wallpaper

Set Accent color to Automatic instead of Manual. Microsoft says Windows will pick an accent color from your background, so the taskbar changes whenever your wallpaper does.

Just Want a Black or White Taskbar?

  • Black or dark gray: set Windows mode to Dark and leave Show accent color on Start and taskbar off.
  • White or light gray: set Windows mode to Light. Microsoft doesn’t offer an accent color on the taskbar in Light mode.
  • Dark taskbar with light apps: choose Custom, set Windows mode to Dark and app mode to Light.

For more on dark mode itself, see how to turn on dark mode in Windows 11.

Other Color Options on the Same Page

  • Show accent color on title bars and window borders: applies your accent to the top bar and edges of windows too, for a matching look.
  • Transparency effects: makes some window backgrounds and surfaces slightly see-through with a blurred, acrylic look.
  • Contrast themes: found under Accessibility, these replace your normal colors with high-contrast ones and override your taskbar color while they’re on.

Why Your Taskbar Color Isn’t Changing

  • The switch is grayed out. Windows mode is set to Light. Switch to Dark, or to Custom with Windows mode set to Dark.
  • The switch is on, but the taskbar is gray. Check that Accent color isn’t producing a gray shade, especially with Automatic and a dark or neutral wallpaper. Choose Manual and pick a brighter color.
  • The color looks darker than the swatch. Users on Microsoft’s Q&A forum report that light accent colors such as pastel pink appear muted on the taskbar. Try a more saturated version of the color, or set an exact hex code.
  • A contrast theme is on. Turn it off under Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
  • Settings are locked. On a work or school PC, your organization may control personalization. Ask your IT team.

How to Go Back to the Default Taskbar Color

Turn off Show accent color on Start and taskbar. The taskbar returns to gray, matching your Windows mode. To go back to the original Windows 11 look, also set Choose your mode to Light.
