To make 7-Zip the default archive opener in Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Default apps, search for .zip, select that file type and choose 7-Zip File Manager. Repeat for other supported archive endings you want it to open, such as .7z or .rar.

Before Changing the Default
7-Zip must already be installed. Open 7-Zip File Manager from Start to confirm the graphical app is available. If you need to install or update it, use the official 7-Zip website and choose the Windows package appropriate to your PC. A work or school device may require your organization’s approved installation process.
The official site lists Windows 11 support and separate x64 and ARM64 installers. This guide concerns the Windows File Manager, not a command-line-only package. The vendor’s source documentation identifies 7zFM.exe as the File Manager and 7z.exe as the console program.
Choose a small archive from a source you trust for the final check. Keep the file unchanged while you adjust its opener. If its ending is hidden, our file-extension guide shows how to display it.
Set 7-Zip for Each Archive Type
The following route follows Microsoft’s default-app instructions for Windows.
- Open Settings. Select Start > Settings, then Apps > Default apps.
- Find one ending. Search the file-type field for
.zip, including the period. Select the matching result. - Choose the opener. Select 7-Zip File Manager from the offered applications and confirm the choice. If it is missing, use the alternative below.
- Check the result. Return to Explorer and double-click your trusted ZIP. Its contents should appear in 7-Zip File Manager. If another app opens, recheck the setting for the file’s actual ending.
- Repeat only where needed. Apply the same choice to
.7zor.rarseparately. Setting ZIP does not decide the opener for every archive format.
Make a note of the previous app before changing each type. For example, you may prefer Explorer for ordinary ZIP browsing and 7-Zip for 7z files; a mixed choice is valid.
Alternative: Open With
Microsoft also documents choosing an app directly from a file in its Windows 11 Explorer instructions.
- Right-click a trusted archive and choose Open with > Choose another app.
- Select 7-Zip File Manager. Choose Always to make it the default for that ending, or Just once to try the file without changing the default.
- Inspect the archive’s contents. Repeat with a different ending only if you want its default changed too.
If 7-Zip Is Not Listed
Microsoft’s file-extension guidance provides Choose an app on your PC for locating another installed program. Use that option to browse to your 7-Zip installation folder and select 7zFM.exe, then choose the intended default or one-time behavior.
Do not choose 7z.exe for the graphical archive-opening workflow. If the File Manager is absent from the installation folder, return to the official installer or ask the administrator who manages the app. Its actual folder can differ, so do not assume an example installation path exists on your PC.
Switch Back or Keep Both Apps
Repeat Settings > Apps > Default apps for the ending and select the previous compatible app. For ZIP files, choose File Explorer when it is offered if you want ordinary Explorer browsing back. Then double-click a trusted ZIP to check the result.
You can continue using Open with for a one-time choice. Avoid resetting every default app merely to undo one archive association; it affects unrelated choices too.
Troubleshooting
- A different archive type still opens elsewhere: check its full ending. Each type needs its own association.
- The File Manager opens but the archive fails: the default-app setting worked; the archive needs a separate check. Confirm the download completed and ask its sender to check the format or provide a fresh copy.
- The setting is disabled or reverts on a managed PC: ask your IT administrator rather than editing registry entries to force it.
- A document inside still opens in Word or another app: its own ending has a separate default. Selecting an archive opener does not replace document apps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does making 7-Zip default unzip files automatically?
No. Opening shows the archive; extraction is a separate action. Our Windows ZIP guide explains the difference and ordinary extraction.
Can 7-Zip create RAR archives?
The vendor lists RAR as an unpacking-only format. Choosing it as the RAR opener does not add RAR creation. ZIP and 7z are among the formats it can create.
Does this make any archive safe or guarantee it will open?
No. An association selects a program; it cannot establish the contents’ safety or repair damaged data. Use a compatible, current app and files whose origin you understand.
Change one archive ending first, verify a trusted sample opens in the intended app, and then repeat for the other types you use.
