To install TurboTax Desktop on Windows 11, go to installturbotax.com, choose your product and Windows, and open the file you download. Accept the license agreement, sign in to your Intuit account, and enter your license code. You need an internet connection and an administrator account on the PC. If you use TurboTax Online in a web browser, there’s nothing to install.
This guide covers TurboTax Desktop (Deluxe, Premier, Home & Business and Business) on a 64-bit Windows 11 PC. It doesn’t cover tax questions or the Mac version.
Desktop or Online: Which One Do You Have?
TurboTax comes in two forms, and only one of them installs:

Installing Desktop doesn’t move a return you started in TurboTax Online, so keep using the version you began with. Pick the Desktop product that fits your situation. Intuit’s TurboTax Desktop product page describes Deluxe for deductions, Premier for investments and rental property, Home & Business for self-employed filers, and Business for partnerships, corporations, multi-member LLCs, and trusts or estates. Your license code only works with the product you bought, so download that one.
Check the System Requirements First
Intuit’s TurboTax Desktop system requirements for Windows are the same for the tax year 2025 and 2026 editions:
- Windows 11, 64-bit, with administrator rights. Intuit says the software won’t install on Windows 10.
- 4 GB of RAM or more recommended.
- 1 GB of disk space, plus up to 4.5 GB more for Microsoft .NET 4.8 if it isn’t installed yet.
- A 1024×768 or higher display.
- An internet connection and an Intuit account to download, install and activate. Broadband is strongly recommended. One license code works with one Intuit account.
- A Windows-compatible inkjet or laser printer if you want paper copies.
The installer includes the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 Redistributable it needs. To check that your account is an administrator, open Settings > Accounts > Your info. It says Administrator under your name if you are one. If it says Standard user, ask the person who manages the PC to sign in or to change your account type.
If your PC is in S mode
Microsoft’s S mode guide explains that Windows 11 in S mode only installs apps from the Microsoft Store. TurboTax Desktop isn’t installed from the Store, so you’d need to switch out of S mode. Microsoft says switching is free but one-way: you can’t go back to S mode afterward. For the steps, here’s how to exit S mode in Windows 11. How to Install TurboTax Desktop
These steps follow Intuit’s How do I get started with TurboTax Desktop? article. Close other programs before you start.
- Go to installturbotax.com in your browser. Intuit’s download page lists the current year’s products.
- Select your product and choose Windows as your operating system. The installer downloads.
- Open File Explorer, go to your Downloads folder, and double-click the TurboTax file. Run it from the folder rather than from the browser’s download list. If Windows asks whether to let the app make changes, select Yes. The TurboTax setup opens.
- Accept the TurboTax License Agreement. Intuit says the product installs automatically. Leave the window open until it finishes, which can take several minutes if Windows also needs to add .NET 4.8.
- Sign in to your Intuit account, or create one. TurboTax asks for your license code.
- Enter your license code, including the dashes. The software activates and you can start your return.
Bought a CD or a retail box?
If your PC has a disc drive, insert the CD and follow the setup that opens. If nothing opens, open File Explorer, select the disc drive under This PC, and double-click the setup file. Most new PCs don’t have a disc drive, so you can install by download from installturbotax.com instead with the same license code. The code is on the CD sleeve, in the box, or in your purchase email. Confirm It Worked and Get the Latest Updates
Open Start and type TurboTax. The program should appear in the results and open to a sign-in or welcome screen with your product name. If you also see a TurboTax shortcut on the desktop, that’s normal.
TurboTax downloads tax form updates over the internet after installation. Let any update that starts on first launch finish before you enter data. Intuit’s troubleshooting article says that if an update looks frozen at 0% or 100%, you shouldn’t end it, even if Task Manager says TurboTax isn’t responding. Wait up to 15 minutes. If the updater closes early, run Disk Cleanup, empty the Recycle Bin, and select Check for Updates in TurboTax.
Install TurboTax on a Second Computer
Intuit says you can install TurboTax Desktop on up to five computers you own and prepare and file up to five of your own federal returns. The Standard edition includes only one federal e-file. Because your license code is saved in your Intuit account, sign in on the new PC and follow the same steps.
TurboTax saves your return as a file on the PC where you made it, so copy that file to the new computer with a USB drive or cloud storage before you continue working there.
To switch between Windows and Mac downloads, sign in to your Intuit account, go to Products & billing, select enter your license code here, and choose the operating system you haven’t installed yet.
If the Installation Fails
Intuit’s Troubleshoot TurboTax Desktop for Windows article suggests these fixes. Try them in this order and retry the installer after each one:
- Confirm the PC meets the requirements above and that you’re signed in to Windows as an administrator.
- Delete the downloaded file and download it again from installturbotax.com. Downloads can become corrupted.
- Run Windows Update, install anything pending, and restart.
- Right-click the setup file, select Properties, and on the Compatibility tab check Run this program as an administrator. Select OK. Running programs as administrator in Windows 11 covers other ways to do this.
- If your antivirus flagged the installer, add TurboTax to its allowed apps and try again. In Microsoft Defender, that means adding an exclusion or briefly turning off real-time protection. Turn protection back on as soon as setup finishes, and only do this for a file you downloaded from Intuit.
- Repair Windows system files with System File Checker. Right-click Start, select Terminal (Admin), type sfc /scannow, and press Enter.
- Restart in Selective Startup, which loads Windows without other startup programs. Press Windows key + R, type msconfig, and press Enter. On the General tab, select Selective startup, clear Load startup items, select OK, and restart. Install TurboTax, then return to msconfig and choose Normal startup.
If Norton 360 is your antivirus and it flagged the installer, you can stop Norton 360 from blocking a program.
Common error messages
- Windows keeps asking you to restart. Select Restart once. If the prompt keeps returning, Intuit suggests uninstalling TurboTax and any Microsoft Visual C++ programs, then reinstalling TurboTax.
- Error 70001. Another Windows user on the PC is running TurboTax. Switch to that user and close TurboTax, or restart the PC.
- A Microsoft Installer error. Your account may not be allowed to write to the TurboTax folder. Close TurboTax, go to the install folder in C:\Program Files\TurboTax, right-click a subfolder, and select Properties > Security > Edit. Select your user name and make sure Allow is checked for Write. Repeat for each subfolder.
- Blank screen or repeated sign-in page. Intuit points to the same troubleshooting article. One of its fixes is to add https://*.intuit.com to Trusted sites in Control Panel > Internet Options > Security and set the security level to Medium.
Remove a broken install and start over
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find TurboTax, select the three dots next to it, and choose Uninstall. Microsoft’s uninstall guide also covers Control Panel if TurboTax doesn’t appear there. Restart, then install again from installturbotax.com. Your license code stays in your Intuit account. Before you uninstall, make a copy of any saved return files.
If none of this works, Intuit suggests installing on a different computer or contacting TurboTax support.
Only download TurboTax from Intuit’s own sites. Copies from other download sites may be out of date or bundled with unwanted software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will TurboTax Desktop install on Windows 10?
No. Intuit’s current requirements list only Windows 11, 64-bit, and say the software won’t install on Windows 10. If your PC can’t run Windows 11, use TurboTax Online in a browser.
Is TurboTax in the Microsoft Store?
TurboTax Desktop is installed from Intuit’s site, not the Store. For other apps, you can get the Microsoft Store on Windows 11.
Do I need an Intuit account?
Yes. Intuit requires one to activate TurboTax Desktop, and it stores your license code there so reinstalling is easier.
Do I need the internet after installing?
You can work on your return offline, but TurboTax needs a connection to activate, download updates and e-file.
Where does TurboTax install?
In a TurboTax folder under C:\Program Files. Intuit’s troubleshooting article gives C:\Program Files\TurboTax\Individual 2023 as an example. Your return files are saved separately from the program.
Once TurboTax opens, have your W-2s, 1099s and last year’s return nearby before you start entering information.
