How to Add a Clock Widget in Windows 11: Desktop and App Options

For a clock that sits on your Windows 11 desktop, one option is Rainmeter: install it from its official website, open Manage, select illustro > Clock > Clock.ini, and load the skin. A skin is a small desktop display. This is a separate app, not a built-in Clock card on the Windows Widgets board.

If you only need to see times in several cities, use the built-in Clock > World clock instead. If you want a card inside the Widgets board, check the installed providers in its picker; do not assume every Windows 11 PC offers a Clock widget.

Choose Where You Want the Clock

  • On the desktop: Rainmeter can display a movable clock skin. Installing additional software is required.
  • In an app window: Windows Clock shows cities and compares times without a third-party desktop skin.
  • On the Widgets board: Windows key + W opens the board. Its cards depend on supported installed apps and providers.
  • In the taskbar: Windows already has a system clock. Turn its time-and-date display back on if it is hidden. To show AM and PM there, see how to set a 12-hour clock in Windows 11.

These are different displays. Adding a Widgets card does not put that card directly on the desktop wallpaper, and the World clock app does not automatically become a floating desktop gadget.

1. Add a Desktop Clock with Rainmeter

Rainmeter is a free desktop-customization app whose official website lists Windows 11 support. Start with its included illustro skins, rather than downloading a skin pack just to obtain a basic clock.

Before installing, save your work and check that software installation is allowed on your PC. Use the official download link, not an advertisement or repackaged installer. On a managed work or school computer, get the administrator’s approval if required.

  1. Visit Rainmeter’s official website and download its current release.
  2. Run the installer and choose Standard installation. Follow the setup prompts. Review Launch Rainmeter on startup: leave it enabled if you want your clock after sign-in, or disable it if you prefer to launch Rainmeter yourself.
  3. Launch Rainmeter if it did not open after setup. Its starter skins may already appear on your desktop.
  4. Click the Rainmeter icon in the taskbar’s notification area to open Manage. You can also right-click a visible skin and select Manage skin.
  5. In the Skins tab, expand illustro, then Clock. Select Clock.ini and choose Load. If the button says Unload, the clock is already loaded.
  6. Drag the clock to a clear area of your desktop. Leave room around frequently used icons so the display is easy to read.

The official installation guide explains startup behavior. Rainmeter’s Manage reference describes loading and unloading skins; its documented illustro\Clock skin uses Clock.ini.

Choose Whether the Clock Stays Above Other Windows

In Manage, select the loaded clock and review Position. Rainmeter offers choices including Normal, On Desktop and Stay Topmost. Choose the behavior you want, then open another window to check the result. A clock that stays above applications can cover their controls.

If dragging does not work, check Draggable and Click through for that skin in Manage. Keep Keep on screen enabled when you want to prevent the display from drifting off a monitor. See Rainmeter’s skin-arrangement instructions for these controls.

Hide or Remove the Desktop Clock

Right-click the clock and choose Unload skin, or select it in Manage and choose Unload. This hides the skin while retaining its saved position. Other starter displays can be unloaded the same way without deleting their files.

To stop every Rainmeter display for the current session, right-click its notification-area icon and select Exit. Its usage guide explains how settings are saved. If you no longer want the app, uninstall Rainmeter through Windows’ installed-app controls.

2. Use the Built-In World Clock

This option is useful for meetings or family members in other time zones. It displays times in the Clock app rather than creating a desktop skin.

  1. Open Start, search for Clock and open the app.
  2. Select World clock. If its navigation is collapsed, use Toggle navigation at the upper left.
  3. Select Add a new city at the bottom. Type a location, choose the matching result and select Add.
  4. Repeat for other cities you want to view. If a city is missing, select another location in the same time zone.
  5. For planning, select Compare and move the time slider. Use the back arrow to return to the ordinary world-clock view.

Microsoft’s World clock instructions document this route. Adding a city does not require changing the computer’s own time zone.

3. Check Available Widgets Cards

Press Windows key + W, then select the + button to open the widget picker. Add a supported widget that is actually listed for your installed apps. Microsoft’s Widgets documentation links to supported apps in the Microsoft Store.

A card remains on the board. Its three-dot menu can offer Customize widget, Remove widget and sizes such as Small, Medium or Large; available sizes depend on the provider. Our general Windows 11 Widgets guide covers adding and arranging cards.

If the Time Is Wrong or the System Clock Is Hidden

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Check the system time and time zone before changing a desktop skin. If automatic time-zone detection is wrong, choose the appropriate zone using the controls available on your PC; do not change the local zone just to view another city.

For a missing taskbar clock, turn on Show time and date in the System tray. Where available, Show seconds in system tray clock adds seconds and uses more power. Microsoft documents these options in its date-and-time settings guide.

Choose Rainmeter for a clock on the desktop, World clock for city comparisons, or an available provider for a Widgets card. Confirm where the display appears before spending time customizing it.
