An ICA file is a small launch file that a Citrix portal (often called StoreFront or Citrix Workspace) creates when you click an app or desktop. It holds connection details for that one session, not the app itself, and it usually expires within a few minutes. That’s why it’s best to click the app on your portal and open the new file right away instead of saving one for later. These steps cover Windows 11 with the current Citrix Workspace app for Windows.
What You Need
- The Citrix Workspace app for Windows. Your employer or school may install it for you, or point you to the Citrix Workspace app downloads page.
- Your Citrix portal address and sign-in. This is the web address your organization gave you, such as a “myapps” or “workspace” page.
- An app or desktop assigned to your account. The ICA file only opens what your organization has given you access to.
Step 1: Install Citrix Workspace App
Skip this if Citrix Workspace is already installed. Check by opening Start and typing Citrix Workspace.
- Go to the Citrix Workspace app downloads page and open Workspace app for Windows. If your IT team gave you a specific installer or version, use that one instead.
- Select Download for the current release and save the installer.
- Open the downloaded file. If Windows asks whether to let the app make changes, select Yes.
- Select Start, then accept the license agreement and select Next.
- Leave the optional components unchecked unless your IT team told you otherwise, then select Install.
- Select Finish when it’s done. If you’re asked to add an account, you can enter your portal address now or close the window.
Citrix lists the installer options and permissions in its Windows installation guide. If you get a message that you need administrator rights, ask your IT team to install it for you.
Step 2: Open the ICA File
- Sign in to your Citrix portal in a web browser and click the app or desktop you want.
- The browser downloads a file that ends in .ica, often named launch.ica.
- Open the downloaded file. In Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, select the Downloads icon in the toolbar and click the file. Or open File Explorer, go to your Downloads folder, and double-click the file.
- Citrix Workspace opens a connection window, then your remote app or desktop appears.
The portal may also offer a faster route. When the browser shows a prompt such as Open Citrix Workspace Launcher?, select Open. That hands the session straight to Citrix Workspace without a downloaded file. Check Always allow if you want to skip the prompt next time.
To save a step in Chrome or Edge, open the Downloads list, select the three-dot menu next to the .ica file, and choose Always open files of this type. Future ICA files will launch as soon as they finish downloading.

If Windows Asks How to Open the ICA File
If double-clicking the file shows a “How do you want to open this file?” box, or the file opens in Notepad, Windows doesn’t have Citrix set as the handler for .ica files. Fix it once in Settings:
- Make sure Citrix Workspace is installed (Step 1).
- Open Settings and select Apps > Default apps.
- In the search box under Set a default for a file type or link type, type .ica.
- Select the current app shown under the .ica result.
- Choose Citrix Connection Manager from the list and select Set default.
- Go back to your portal, click the app again, and open the new ICA file.
If Citrix Connection Manager isn’t in the list, select Choose an app on your PC and browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\wfcrun32.exe, the program that launches ICA files. Don’t choose Notepad or another program to “open” the file. That only shows the text inside it and won’t start a session.

If the ICA File Still Won’t Open
The file opens but nothing happens, or you see “file not found”
ICA files expire quickly and are often set to delete themselves after one use. Don’t reuse an old launch.ica from your Downloads folder. Go back to the portal, click the app again, and open the new file right away. Delete older copies so you don’t open the wrong one.
The portal keeps downloading files instead of opening the app
Your portal may not have detected Citrix Workspace. Look for a link on the portal such as Detect Citrix Workspace app or an account settings option to change how apps launch, and run detection again. Windows SmartScreen or your browser blocks the file
Some browsers flag .ica files because they launch a program. If the file came from your organization’s portal, select Keep in the browser’s download warning. Don’t open ICA files that arrive by email or from a site you don’t recognize, since they can point to any server.
You see an error after Citrix starts
Errors such as “Cannot connect to the server” or “You have not chosen to trust” come from the remote connection, not Windows. Note the exact message and the app name, then contact your organization’s help desk. Some organizations also block launching ICA files from disk on purpose, which Citrix describes in its ICA file security settings. In that case, launch the app from the Citrix Workspace app itself instead of the browser.
You can’t install Citrix Workspace
Many Citrix portals offer a browser-only option, sometimes labeled Use light version or Use web browser. It runs the session in a browser tab without the desktop app, if your organization has enabled it.
