Toshiba L855-S5372 Review

If you are looking for a mid-range laptop, then you have likely seen many of the Intel i5 options available. While that is an excellent processor, and many of the computers that use it are great machines, you may have decided that you want the more powerful Intel i7 processor. Whether this is because you need to run a lot of resource-intensive programs or because you want to ensure that your computer will be able to handle new applications for years to come, many of the i7 computers are in a higher price range.

Fortunately Toshiba offers this L855-S5372 for those users that want a powerful computer at a more affordable price. Pros of the Toshiba L855-S5372

  • Excellent processor
  • Comes with 6 GB of RAM, but can be upgraded to 16 GB
  • USB 3.0 connectivity
  • HDMI out

Cons of the Toshiba L855-S5372

  • Battery life is listed at “up to 4 hours” but seems to be less than that
  • No Bluetooth
  • Integrated graphics card is not ideal for heavy gaming

The biggest draw of this computer is the 3rd-generation Intel i7 processor. This laptop is blazingly fast because of that component. Additionally, the 6 GB of RAM is a nice bonus, as many laptops in this range only come with 4 GB. However, if your needs exceed the capabilities of that amount of RAM, it can be upgraded to 16 GB. This computer is capable of some gaming, even with the integrated graphics, although the lack of a dedicated card will make it more difficulty to play more modern, resource-intensive game,s or to do a lot of professional-level video editing.

The 640 GB hard drive provides ample space for your application installs as well as your pictures, music and videos. However, the hard drive speed is 5400 RPM. This prevents it from achieving the extremely fast bootups and program launches that a solid state drive or hybrid drive are capable of achieving. Laptops featuring hybrid drives and solid state drives are typically several hundred dollars more expensive, so you may be better off purchasing a solid state drive separately and installing it yourself, as opposed to looking for a computer with an i7 processor and a faster hard drive.

Unfortunately all of this performance comes at a price, and it is most noticeable in this area. Toshiba claims a battery life of up to 4 hours, but many users are reporting real-world battery life as being closer to 1-2 hours. Of course, battery life is largely dependent upon how the computer is being used and the power settings of the user, but be aware that the 4 hours of battery life might only be achievable on low-performance settings and with a minimal amount of programs running.

This laptop weighs in at 5.5 lbs, which is about average for 15 inch laptops that feature a CD or DVD drive. if you are looking for a lighter option, then you may need to consider an ultrabook (click to view on Amazon), which will not include the optical drive.

The Toshiba L855-S5372 has a number of useful ports and conenctions that will allow you to connect your devices, as well as access network resources on a wired or wireless network. Note, however, that it does not included built-in Bluetooth. The full list of ports and connections is shown below.

  • 1 USB 2.0 port
  • 2 USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 HDMI port
  • 1 RGB port
  • 1 headphone port
  • 1 microphone port
  • Webcam
  • 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi
  • 10/100/1000 (gigabit) ethernet
  • Media card reader (Secure Digital, SDHC, SDXC, miniSD, microSD, Multi Media Card)
  • SuperMulti DVD Burner

This is an excellent computer for power users that want a laptop that can easily be charged when the battery runs low. The Intel i7 will keep this computer ahead of the curve, as far as technical requirements, for several years. The 6 GB of RAM is also more than enough for most users, but can be upgraded substantially, if necessary. The short battery life may deter some people, but this computer seems more apt for use at home or in an office than it does for frequent travelers that need to work in locations that have difficult-to-access power outlets.
