If you’ve been using smartphones for a few years, then you have probably built up a pretty large list of contacts. Whether they are complete contacts, just phone numbers, or just email addresses – that list can get pretty big. But as your number of contacts grows, it becomes more of a hassle to find contacts that you do not use very often. You can delete contacts to help make your list shorter, or you can change the way that your contacts are sorted. Choosing to sort by first name instead of last name is a helpful option if you constantly find yourself looking for a contact by their first name, or if you can’t remember a contact’s last name.

This is also a feature that you can use to switch back and forth between different sorting options. So if you generally like to sort by last name but can’t find a particular contact, you can switch to first name sorting to find it, then switch back to your preferred last name sorting when you are done.
Step 1: Tap the Settings icon.
Step 2: Select the Mail, Contacts, Calendars option.
Step 3: Scroll down to the Contacts section, then touch the Sort Order button.
Step 4: Select the First, Last option. You can then press the Home button at the bottom of your phone to exit the menu.
It is worth noting that you can have different sort orders and display orders. So if you want to have your contacts sorted alphabetically by first name, but displayed as “Last, First,” then you are free to do so.
