The HP ProBook is a really exciting laptop, because it is different from a lot of the other similarly priced laptops that you might be considering. Aside from its’ excellent battery life and impressive performance, it also runs the Windows 7 Professional operating system.
For people that need a new laptop and have been putting it off because they don’t want to work with Windows 8, this difference can mean the world when deciding to purchase the computer. Note that it does also come with an upgrade disc for Windows 8 if you decide later that you want to use it, although the upgrade is optional, and can be performed whenever you wish. So check out the specs and additional information below to see if the HP ProBook 4540s has what you need.

The Intel i5 processor is the perfect chip for the type of person to which this laptop appeals. It has a nice balance of efficiency and performance that allows for easy multi-tasking, plus it can manage some more resource-driven programs. You will even be able to play some games on this laptop, although the lack of a dedicated graphics card is going to prevent you from playing something like Skyrim or Bioshock Infinite on high settings. But it will manage Diablo 3, the Sims, World of Warcraft and other similar, older games.
The 4 GB of RAM that are included may not be enough for some power users, however, but the RAM can easily be replaced, and the two RAM slots can each accommodate an 8 GB RAM stick, allowing for up to 16 GB total. The 7200 RPM hard drive performs better than the 5400 RPM options you typically find in laptop computers, and it’s actually a bit of a rarity to see one being offered here.
Areas of portability are where this computer really shines. HP’s ProBooks are truly dedicated to business users that are on the go, and this is clearly evident with the 7 hours of battery life that this computer is able to deliver. Additionally important is the aluminum case, which is both durable and attractive. The keyboard is also identified as being spill-resistant, and the hard drive features HP 3D DriveGuard to secure the hard drive in the event of impact, such as a drop or bump.
Finally, despite its’ rugged appearance, the laptop is surprisingly light, weighing in at just 5.1 lbs. This is impressive for a laptop of this size that also includes a CD/DVD drive.
Since the ProBook 4540s is designed as a machine that you can use effectively away from home or office, they have provided a lot of ports and connections to help you connect to your devices and networks. These options include:
- 802.11 b/g/n WiFi
- 10/100/1000 wired ethernet port
- (2) USB 3.0 port
- (2) USB 2.0 ports
- HDMI port
- Stereo microphone in
- Memory card reader
This is a great laptop, especially for individuals that need to travel a lot while they manage their small business tasks. Windows 8 scares a lot of people that haven’t tried it yet, and the option to use the more familiar Windows 7 operating system is a huge benefit. Plus, if you decide to switch to Windows 8 in the future, you have that option with the included license and disc.
This computer includes a lot of options, specifically security options, that aren’t available on every computer. The fingerprint scanner and face log-on options offer an extra level of security for your personal and confidential information, which is especially helpful when you are away from home.
This is a very well-rounded laptop that is the perfect choice for people that travel, or who aren’t quite ready to make the change to Windows 7. There probably won’t be a lot of Windows 7 laptops available in the near future that are still running current-generation components, so now is the perfect time to pick this one up before it’s no longer available.
