Performance

The convertible laptop market isn’t very populated right now, at least when it comes to options in this price range. Many of the more expensive options offer i5 processors, which make them legitimate replacements to fully-powered laptops. The Intel Atom processor on this convertible however, is noticeably slower than what you would find on something like the Surface Pro. The performance from the processor on this Asus is much more comparable to what you would see on the Surface RT. That is definitely not a bad thing, though, as you will be able to use the free Word and Excel apps, as well as browse the Internet, without any trouble. If you are familiar with netbooks, or are looking to something similar to that, then you should have a pretty good idea of the type of performance that you will get from this Asus.

If you are so inclined to test the graphics and performance of the Transformer when it comes to playing full PC games, you will find that it can play some popular games like Torchlight or League of Legends on low or medium settings and get about 40 FPS. Obviously not the greatest performance, but somewhat impressive considering the hardware and the intention of this device.

Portability

Obviously the portability of a convertible tablet is going to be pretty good, as that it the area in which it was built to succeed. Under normal use you can expect to get somewhere between 10-12 hours of battery life. This will vary depending upon how you spend that time and how many apps you are running at once, but that is battery life that is on par with the iPad. But, unlike the iPad, the detachable keyboard gives you access to a USB 3.0 port and a mini HDMI port. That is a very important distinction, and is one of the main reasons that this could legitimately be a laptop replacement for some people.

The touchscreen is great, and the 5-point multitouch capacitive capabilities give you a lot of different options for advanced touchscreen gestures. Windows 8 was built with touchscreen devices in mind, so there is little loss of functionality when you elect to use the Tarnsformer as a tablet instead of a laptop. More than anything, the Transformer really excels at offering a fully-capable tablet that can easily turn into an impressive netbook or small tablet.

When the keyboard is attached to the screen, it weighs 2.4 lbs. When the keyboard is removed, the tablet portion of the device is just 1.2 lbs. Both of these weights are great for the respective type of device, making this the dream option for someone that wants an affordable, portable touchscreen device with a keyboard.

Connectivity

The form factor of a convertible laptop doesn’t leave a lot of room for ports, so there are far fewer on a device like this than there are on a full-sized laptop. The full list of ports and connections include:

  • 802.11 a/g/n WiFi
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 1 USB 3.0 ports
  • Micro HDMI port
  • Front-facing camera with microphone. Good for Skype.
  • Micro SD card reader
  • Audio jack combo

Conclusion

Anyone that thinks they would like to have a convertible laptop will find it hard not to like this product. It’s affordable, comparable to much more expensive options, and very versatile. It has a full version of Windows 8, plus you get Office 2013 Home and Student (the full version) included with the device. This isn’t a free trial or anything. It’s yours for as long as you own the Transformer.

This is a terrific value for something with such a good battery life that can easily replace two more expensive devices for a number of people.
