How to Double Underline in Excel 2013

When you are applying formatting to some of the data in a spreadsheet, you might only stick to the more common options like bold, italic, and underline.

But Microsoft Excel has a much larger selection of formatting choices that you can use to get the right point across.

How to Use Microsoft Excel Double Underline Formatting

  1. Open your Excel file.
  2. Select the cells to modify.
  3. Choose the Home tab.
  4. Click the Font Settings button.
  5. Select the Underline menu and choose Double.
  6. Click OK.

There are many different types of formatting that you can apply to the numbers or words in your Excel spreadsheet, and even very experienced Excel users are unlikely to encounter, much less use, all of these options.

One of the formatting options that I see very little of is underlining other than the standard single-underlining option in Excel. But there are actually several different underline options in Excel 2013, including a Double Underline option.

How to Double Underline a Value (Numbers or Letters) in Microsoft Excel 2013 (guide with Pictures)

The steps in this article were performed in Excel 2013, but will work in Excel 2010 or 2016 as well.

Step 1: Open the spreadsheet containing the value(s) that you wish to double underline.

Step 2: Select the cell(s) to which you want to apply the double underline formatting.

Note that you can select an entire row by clicking the row number at the left of the sheet, or you can select an entire column by clicking the column letter.

Step 3: Click the Home tab at the top of the window.

Step 4: Click the small Font Settings button at the bottom-right corner of the Font section of the ribbon.

Step 4: Click the Underline dropdown menu, select the Double option, then click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

Note that there is also a Double Accounting underline option, if you would prefer to use that styling instead.

You can use this same method if you have some cells with the double underline formatting that you want to remove. Simply select those cells, then come back to the Format Cells dialog box and switch the Underline dropdown menu setting back to None.
